Newsletter Term 4 – week 1

Posted on October 19th, 2009 in Uncategorized by weps

A Job For You!

Welcome back everyone,

I hope that despite the generally inclement weather you enjoyed the holidays and that the children have returned refreshed and ready for a busy term ahead. Details of all the school happenings for Term 4 will be published here in the newsletter over the next few weeks.

This term we will be undertaking a range of evaluations relating to school management and curriculum. The first of these is the Parent Satisfaction Survey which is enclosed in this newsletter.

This Survey has been designed to cover a number of areas – school environment, student welfare, school uniform, technology, service and communication and is vital in assisting the school to continually improve our service to you.

This survey is for parents to complete and is confidential. Please do not write your name on the Survey. Students will be given separate surveys designed specifically for them. Students will complete their surveys at school. It would be appreciated if the completed survey could be returned to school in a sealed envelope by Friday 30th October.

Thank you for your anticipated support. I look forward to sharing the results with you later this year and in the 2009 Annual School Report.

Enjoy your week.

National Literacy and Numeracy Week.

National Literacy and Numeracy Week (NLNW) is an Australian Government initiative and has been celebrated in all states and territories for the past ten years.

NLNW focuses on literacy and numeracy practices from Kindergarten to Year 10 and celebrates successful literacy and numeracy projects and programs by schools and their local communities. Visit www.nlnw.nsw.edu.au for some great ideas to support your child’s literacy and numeracy learning.

At WEPS this Tuesday we are inviting all parents to visit the school and be part of our Reading Counts At WEPS Day. The children will be engaged in fun activities based on children’s literature, linking both literacy and numeracy (see over for the timetable).

Another NLNW happening this week will include some classes taking part in Reach for the Stars – a yearly project that collects data from schools all around Australia. Last year’s project involved throwing a coin at a target. This year classes around Australia will collect information on their names such as the number of letters in first names, the most common first name initial, the number of vowels in names etc.

And, it’s on again – Guess My Weight and Guess My Number. Each morning and recess from Tuesday the seniors will display a jar full of marbles. The aim is to guess the mass of the jar and how many marbles it contains. Each guess is $1 or three guesses for $2. You may enter as many times as you wish. The winners will receive a giant calculator and a surprise gift. The money raised will be used to help with education in areas less fortunate than ours through World Vision Australia. If we raise $126 we can help train a teacher in an underprivileged country. A further $63 would allow us to buy educational toys for an indigenous community. So dig deep and start guessing.

All great reasons to be part of NLNW this week!

Premier’s Spelling Bee.

Our inaugural Woonona East Spelling Bee was held last Friday. The finalists for stage two (years 3&4) were Tess Hulme, Holly Jones, Emerson Moore, Jay Archer, Georgia Atkinson and Sanna Eriksson. The finalists for stage three (years 5&6) were Teya Storm, Stephen Wallace, Jack Currie, Nikita Portman, Kane McCrae and Sonia Hilliard.

There were some very difficult words to be spelt and all finalists put in a fantastic effort. The audience particularly liked the great attempt at spelling the very difficult, yacht – ‘yought’!

Well done to all our finalists and congratulations to Jack, Nikita, Georgia and Emerson who now go on to represent the school at the regional final on Wednesday, 30th September at Bellambi Public School. Gud luk!

Southern Stars

This Friday and Saturday our wonderful dance troupe will be performing in the Southern Stars spectacular at the Wollongong Entertainment Centre. Good luck to our boys and girls and a huge thankyou to Mrs DiBello and Mrs Harris-Cross for their support and all the parents who have helped out in one way or another. Children going along to watch the performance this Friday should have their $22 in by tomorrow. Tickets for the Friday and

Saturday performances are available through Ticketek.

Year 2 Special Swimming Extra Places.

During the first two weeks of Term 4, Year 2 children will be involved in the Special Swimming Scheme at Corrimal Pool. The cost of the program is $60 which covers bus fare to and from the pool and entry. The swimming lessons are free and conducted by trained DET instructors. This year we have a small number of spare spaces for children in Year 3 who are unable to swim 25 metres confidently. If you would like your child to be involved please pick up a note from the office and send it along with your payment as soon as possible or see Mrs D’Arcangelo for more information.

Office Closed This Tuesday 1st September.

The school office will be closed this Tuesday for staff training. Money and notes can still be placed in the brown box in the foyer.

Premier’s Sporting Challenge.

We are now into the 6th week of the Sporting Challenge and the children are going great guns at keeping themselves active. All K-2 classes are on track to receive their gold award next term and most Yr 3-6 classes are averaging gold medal level each week ie 60 minutes/day of physical activity that makes you ‘huff and puff’. Keep up the great work!

Kindergarten Enrolments.

Transition to school sessions will be starting in the last two weeks of this term and we are hoping to have all our local Kinders enrolled by then. Please pass this message on to any potential WEPS 2010 Kinder parents.

School Zone Road Safety

A reminder to parents that from 1 July 2009 the government has increased fines and loss of demerit points for all driving offences occurring in school zones. We are committed to providing a safe environment for all our students and visitors, so please observe the 40km/h speed limit during school hours and stop in designated drop off areas only.

Going Batty in 1/2C!

Last week 1/2C had a small, furry visitor in their classroom. This turned out to be a sheath tailed bat, a tiny member of the bat family that catches insects on its sticky tail.

We had a bat at school. It had soft fur. It is nocturnal and it sleeps upside down. It was a sheath tailed bat.

It eats insects and a little bit of fruit. By Harmony.

This morning Byron was on his way to school and he saw a bat. He picked it up and rang his mum. Mrs Carter called WIRES.

The bat was cute and cuddly. It had tiny ears and teeth. It had leathery wings. It was shy and had soft fur. It was funny-looking, like a spider.

We looked on the Internet. We found out that it ate insects and occasionally fruit. It uses its tail to catch insects.

It tried to hide in the corner of the box and we called it Jessie.

Today Byron went to school and he found a bat in the gutter. He called Mrs Carter. She got gloves and a towel, but Byron had it in his hands to keep it warm.

The bat had black eyes and sharp little claws and it was very shy.

It is nocturnal. It sleeps in the day and wakes up at night. It is a sheath-tailed bat. They are very small. It had little teeth. We thought it was a baby and we rang WIRES and they came and told us it was fully grown. We called it Jessie. By Caleb.

Environment group

Mulch has arrived!  This week we will be preparing the gardens for summer!  We will be putting mulch on the gardens, checking the plant guards (after all this wind) and filling the frog ponds.  Lots to do!  Many hands make light work – we would love to see you.  Meet at the flagpole at 9am and help for half an hour.  Thank you.

Headphones for tech

This term we have been creating electronic books.  Later in the term we will be creating music with Garageband.  Your child would benefit from using headphones for these activities.  Please allow your child to bring some headphones (just cheapies) to tech so they can engage and create more fully.  Thanks Suzie Wynn-Jones.

Newsletter Term 3 – week 4

Posted on August 17th, 2009 in Environment, Uncategorized by weps

Upcoming Literacy and Numeracy Events.

Next Wednesday 26th August we will be holding our annual Book Week celebration activities. Book Week is the longest running children’s festival in Australia, celebrating its 64th birthday in 2009. This year the theme is ‘Book Safari’. Ms Thompson has organised some terrific activities for Wednesday 26th August starting at 11:20. There will be lots of exciting activities including a juggling show, safari book hunt, library displays and dress-up parade. We hope that you can come along, join in the fun and get ‘wild about reading’ on our ‘Book Safari’!

Another exciting event is National Literacy and Numeracy Week which will be held nationwide from the 31st August to the 4th September. During this week schools around Australia will be involved in a variety of projects related to maths and literacy.

Ms Pechey recently applied for, and received a grant of $1000 to cover the cost of our project, ‘Reading Counts At WEPS’. Thankyou Ms Pechey! This enabled us to purchase many new picture books for the library and special teaching resources for our teachers to use in Literacy and Numeracy Week.

For ‘Reading Counts At WEPS’ we will be inviting parents, grandparents and carers to school on Tuesday 1st September to participate in classroom activities so keep that date free to join us and see how ‘Reading Counts At WEPS’! Watch out for more information in next week’s newsletter.

Have an enjoyable week.

Canteen Crisis!

Sadly we are now almost at crisis point with volunteers for our canteen. With more parents working and a range of other factors, it is becoming more and more difficult to staff the canteen. Please read the enclosed note carefully as we need to come up with some solutions if we want to maintain our excellent, healthy and cost effective canteen service.

Premier’s Spelling Bee

Due to clashes in our very busy Term 3 calendar the school Spelling Bee will now be held on Friday 28th August. Parents are welcome to attend the Spelling Bee which will commence at 9:10 am under the COLA.

As sponsor of the NSW Spelling Bee, Westpac are giving away a ‘Top Spelling Tips’ booklet which you can receive free from your local Westpac branch.

Come on a Book Safari at Woonona East

All parents and friends are invited to join us for our Book Week extravaganza on Wednesday 26th August at 11:20am. Students are asked to come dressed in safari gear or dressed as a jungle animal. They also need to make and carry a sign showing their favourite book find in our parade.

Other activities on the day include a Juggling Show presented by Erin Masters from the Half High Circus and Circus, a rendition of ‘Going on a Book Hunt’ presented by 4P using the rhyme ‘Going on a Bear Hunt’ as inspiration, a picnic lunch with your children (the canteen will have some great safari snacks available), a safari book hunt around the school which starts at the library where you can pick up your clues and Book Week games and craft in the library.

As part of our festivities on the day we will be having a Safari Jeep Display in the library. Children are asked if they could make a safari jeep from recycled materials.

Book Week is all about bringing books, parents, and children together. So come along and join in our celebrations. I look forward to meeting you and seeing all the children’s wonderful creations.

Donna Thompson

Teacher Librarian

P&C Cleanup Day

The P&C is keen to organise another cleanup day early in Term 3 on Saturday 31st October. Please put this date in your calendar and try to come along. Our last day in Term 1 was a great success.

Waste Audit

Last term 3/4L and officers from Wollongong Council completed a ‘waste audit’ of our school. For all the details, see our enclosed report. And remember, to cut back on packaging we can use

  • paper wrap, brown paper recycled bags but no plastic bags or aluminium foil
  • reusable containers that get taken home and washed
  • lunch boxes that have lots of separate sections
  • reusable forks and spoons
  • drink bottles with water that can be used each day.

Thankyou P&C!

Thankyou to our P&C for their generous donation of $1000 which will cover the cost of costume materials and bus fare for our Southern Stars students.

Tiger Shield

Unfortunately Wooona East will not be entering teams in this year’s Tiger Shield. Thank you to all those students who expressed an interest in playing. The numbers were not sufficient to enter competitive teams.

Soccer Socks

Thanks to Doug Hamill for donating a box of socks for school sporting teams. The boys looked very impressive last Friday during PSSA sport at Ocean Park last week. As with the soccer shirts, the boys are expected to look after these over the course of the PSSA competition and wash and return them after the last game.

PSSA Sport

A reminder that the permission note that students took home had the wrong date for Round 3 on it. Round 3 is on the 28th August, not the 4th September as stated on the note.

Book Club News

Yet again another fantastic selection of books will be on offer, ranging from titles such as Boys Only and Girls Only, to books about knitting (which seems to be the latest craze), drawing, paper lantern making, crazy science projects and cup cake creations.  Please return all book club orders to the office by Wednesday 19th August. Happy Reading.

Time to Return MS Readathon Sponsorship

A big thankyou to the families and friends of our WEPS participants who have sponsored their reading during the 30th year of the MS Readathon! As WEPS students begin to close their books on this year’s program it is nearing the time to return sponsorship funds and collect their hard-earned certificate and reading rewards. With an official money-due date of August 31st, the fastest way to return sponsorship is online with the help of a parent. Students can also return the Completion Form (which they received in the post recently) and any receipt books sent to them. If you have misplaced your form a replacement can be downloaded from www.msreadathon.org.au or call 1300 677 323).

Live Life Well @ School Survey Reminder

Please don’t forget to your surveys to the box in the school office; blue for parents, white for students. feel free to add your comments on the reverse of the sheet.

School Contributions

It is not too late to make your voluntary contribution to our school. So far we have raised close to $1,505. Half of this will go towards the library to purchase new books and the other half will be used to update reading materials and other classroom resources.

Well Done Laura!

Recently, Laura in 5/6H competed in the NSW Schools Cross Country Championships at Eastern Creek. Laura came in 24th, bettering 71 other girls from the 95 starters. Congratulations Laura on this wonderful effort!

Fantastic Effort Brittany

Last week Brittany in 5/6C represented our school in the NSW PSSA Basketball team at the National Titles.  Overall, NSW came in 5th.  Congratulations Brittany on your wonderful achievement in your chosen sport!

The Animals Are Back!

Thanks to Mr Myer for rejuvenating our playground animals. With some necessary repairs and a new coat of paint and lacquer they are looking as good as ever and the children are enjoying playing with them.

Band

Band will start again this Tuesday 18th August.  Fees will therefore be $49 (7X$7) for this term. Thank you parents for your continuing support of our school band. Children will receive their band fee notes on Tuesday.

Newsletter Term 1 – week 4 -2009

Posted on February 16th, 2009 in Newsletter, Uncategorized by weps

BUSHFIRE RELIEF

There will be very few of us who have not watched in horror the unfolding tragedy of the Victorian bushfires over the past week. I am sure, too, that many of you were also uplifted, as I was, by the courage of the survivors and by their determination to rebuild their communities.

I was very impressed last week by the number of children who asked if our school could support the bushfire relief effort. It is gratifying to witness such generosity and compassion in our students. Below is a message from the SRC.

Woonona East will be holding a mufti-day fundraiser to help the people who have lost their homes and belongings in the bushfires in Melbourne, Victoria.

Rhiannon and Tegan will collect the gold coin donation and all the money raised will be donated to the Salvation Army bushfire appeal. Our mufti-day will be held on Wednesday 25th February. Children can dress as farmers or wear regular mufti clothing.

We hope that everyone will participate in this fund-raising event. Rhiannon and Tegan on behalf of the SRC.

Have a great week!

Sharyn Liddle

Principal

Birthday Treats

As we have so many students with food intolerances and allergies to particular ingredients, the children are asked not to bring birthday cakes or treats to share with classmates.  Your understanding and support in this matter is appreciated.

School Volunteers: Working With Children Check

Thank you to all the parents who have volunteered to help out in our school. Under legislation, all school volunteers who have any contact with children must complete a Working With Children Check each year. Forms are available from the school office. Completed forms should be given to Mrs Liddle.

Lost Property

The lost property box (large, white plastic) will be placed near the Corinda Road gate each morning. If your child has lost a jumper, towel, lunchbox etc this will be the place to find it. Class bag rooms should also be checked. The box will be cleaned out fortnightly and good quality unclaimed items recycled. Please remember to label all your child’s belongings so they can easily be returned to them if lost.

Back to School- A Message From ‘Asthma NSW’.

Early February, just after school goes back, is the

time of year when children are most likely to have a flare-up of their asthma, so it is important that

parents keep an eye on their children’s asthma,

ensure they take their prescribed preventer

medication regularly, and that they always carry

their reliever medication with them.

Symptoms in young children may include wheezing,

persistent coughing or shortness of breath. If these symptoms do not respond to the child’s reliever medication, or if reliever medication is needed every day, we are encouraging parents to take their children immediately to a doctor.

Although asthma is mild in most children, it can be

serious and even life-threatening if it is not properly managed, so it is important that anyone with asthma sees their doctor regularly and develops an asthma action plan so they know what to do when their symptoms worsen.

Ensure that you see your GP for an update on your child’s asthma and be sure to supply the school with an updated Asthma Action Plan.

If parents have any questions, they should call the

Asthma Information Line on 1800 645 130 or speak

with their doctor.

We will be holding a fundraising committee meeting on FRIDAY 20TH FEBRUARY 2009 AT 2.15PM in the old staffroom (next to the office).  If anyone is interested in helping us out with our fundraising this year it would be great to see you on Friday.  For any of you new Kindy mums or dads out there who are keen to get involved with the school please come along, we need some fresh ideas to help raise money for our wonderful school.  A big callout goes to any Year 6 parents who would like to help out with fundraising for the Year 6 farewell – this is something that will be separate to the normal school fundraising and help is needed.  A flyer will go out shortly regarding upcoming fundraising events.  If you have any suggestions but are unable to come to the meeting please email me at mmcdermott2@optusnet.com.au or leave your suggestions with the office.   Thanks from the Fundraising Team.

Band News

Mr Eric Dunan, from the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music will be at school on Tuesday this week to talk with the students about joining this year’s band. Once we know how many students are interested, we can calculate the cost /student /term. Tuition fees will need to be paid at the beginning of each term to avoid the school being out of pocket at the end of the year.

School Security 1300 880 021

For safety reasons, the school grounds, including the cricket nets, are out of bounds on weekends. School security can be contacted on the above number if you see or hear anything suspicious during out-of-school hours.

Back to School Safety Challenge 3: Always Use The Safety Door.

Always use the safety door when getting in and out of the car. Placing a “Safety Door’ sticker on the rear left-hand side window of the car will remind children of the safest door to get in and out of the car. Stickers can be obtained from the Road safety Officer at the local Council. To highlight this point, a colouring competition sheet can be found in this weeks’ Advertiser. Children should return completed forms to Mrs Liddle by Friday 6th of March to have a chance of winning some great prizes including a $300 bike voucher and passes to Taronga Zoo and Jamberoo Recreation Park.

Sexuality and Relationship Education for Families.

Ever wondered what you will say when your child asks the important question, “Where did I come from?” To help you answer such questions more confidently, on Monday 2nd March Interrelate Family Centres will be running two evening information sessions for parents and their children in the school library. Please find enclosed a flyer explaining all the details. Please finalise payments by Friday 27th February.

Crunch and Sip

What a fantastic effort!  Our first Crunch and Sip week has been very successful with most children in every class participating.  Remember it is fruit and vegetables only – no biscuits or dips.  This is a short 5 minute break, so keep food down to a minimum and resist the temptation to fill your child’s container.  Any food your child does not finish can be eaten at recess.

The Live Well @ School Team.

Newsletter Week 2 Term 4 2008

Posted on October 21st, 2008 in Uncategorized by weps

•    Our Living Well at School fitness program kicked off today. All students from Kindergarten to Year 6 “got active”. Some were dancing, some did exercise circuits while others played fast and furious games. The fitness program will happen 3 times a week and it will be a case of drop everything and get out in the playground and get active.
•    At present we are planning for 2009. If you have a concern about the class your child will go into next year, please put this in writing and forward it to the school. We will consider all such issues in forming classes. Alternatively, you can speak to me about concerns you may have. In general we will endeavour not to place your child with the teacher they had this year.
•    Thank you P&C! The P&C have decided to fund a performance for students as a way of saying thank you to the school community for supporting their fundraising efforts. We have booked Steve’s Unique Puppets for the 19th November. The performance will be “Peer Power”. Steve came out earlier in the year and the show, “Bully For You”, was very much enjoyed.

Live Life Well at School
This school is ready. Is your child ready to …
LIVE outside the BOX
Students at our school have been invited to participate in a fun challenge called Live Outside the Box. This challenge is a chance for everyone to learn about aspects of our daily lives that can help us all maintain a healthy, active lifestyle. Live Outside the Box aims to promote practical ideas for including more daily physical activity, reducing sedentary behaviours such as watching TV and developing healthy eating and drinking habits. Over two weeks students will be recording the following details into their Live Outside the Box paswsports:
•    their healthy breakfasts.
•    how much water they drink.
•    how much fruit and vegetables they eat.
•    how much time they spend being active.
•    how much time they spend watching TV/computers.
•    the amount of ‘sometimes’ foods they are eating.
Once your child completes the passport each day, we ask that you sign it off to show that it’s accurate. Your child may also bring home a few ‘Activity Sheets’, which are designed to be a fun learning experience for your child and your family. We hope you enjoy these activities. All students receive a certificate at the end of the two-week (Gold, Silver or Bronze) depending on the amount of points they accumulate over the two-weeks. For more information see www.healthykids.nsw.gov.au/
We hope you enjoy Living Outside the Box!

To enable the payment to be made schools have been asked to provide details of family and student names and addresses. The Department proposes to forward the $50 allowance from mid-January 2009 for students in Years 1 to 10 in 2009 and from mid–February 2009 for students in Kindergarten and Years 11 and 12 in 2009.
