Hello again everyone,

I hope to see you all this Thursday at our family fun night.

Our hard working fund raising committee has organised lots of exciting things for the children to do including a huge, inflatable obstacle course, face painting and games. There will be plenty of delicious food and drinks, including a barbecue, teriyaki chicken rolls, fried rice, corn on the cob, cakes, pancakes and coffee.

For the first time we will be having carols. I would like to thank Nigel and Linda Hilton and the members of the Woonona Baptist Church for their generosity in providing the music for the night. As well, there will be glow products and candles on sale to give the evening a special Christmas glow. A wonderful way to bring in the festive season!

The fun starts at 4:30 and finishes around 8:00pm.

More information can be found on the enclosed flyer.

If you are able to help in any way at all please give Kate (42844596/ 0403 552 223) or Michelle (42841441) a ring as soon as possible.

Enjoy your week.

I would like to extend a sincere thankyou to the hardworking P&C executive, to all the parents who made it along to the meetings and to everyone who has supported their efforts throughout the year whether through helping in the canteen or uniform shop, helping with stalls and fundraisers, purchasing tickets, cookies or sunscreen or attending fundraising activities such as the bus trips, Trivia Night and upcoming Family Feast and Carols evening.

If you are not already involved I urge you to come along in 2010 to find out what the P&C Association at WEPS is all about. It is a wonderful way to both support the school through fundraising and to be involved in the school’s decision making process.

Enjoy your week.

Uniform Shop Hours

Monday, Wednesday and Friday 8.45am-9.15am

School Numbers For 2010

The process of organising classes for 2010 continues. We currently have 293 students allowing us to form 12 classes.

In keeping with compulsory DET limits on class sizes in K-2, Kinder classes can have only 20 students and Years 1 and 2, 22 and 24 respectively. In Years 3-6 there will need to be a number of composite classes and numbers will be tight in every class.

Our overall numbers will need to rise to well over 300 by early February for a 13th class to be formed but this seems unlikely at this stage.

Thankyou to the parents who have made written requests regarding their child’s placement in 2010. Please be aware however that these can only be accommodated where class numbers and overall class structures allow.

World Vision Fund Raiser

Thankyou to everyone who supported the gold coin mufti day last Friday. Due to your generosity we were able to raise $410 to support our student, Rita Jean. A wonderful effort everyone!

Boardies Day

Another great cause is Boardies Day this Friday in support of Woonona Surf Life Saving Club. The children are encouraged to come dressed on their brightest board shorts and to donate a gold coin for the privilege. Surf life savers do a wonderful job in keeping us safes on the beach all summer and this is one way we can say thankyou.

“Toys ‘n’ Tucker”

Thanks to everyone who has sent in toys and food for this worthy cause. Any remaining donations need to be at school by this Friday.

Christmas Disco

The Christmas disco will be held at Russell Vale Community Hall on Monday 7th December. There will be two sessions with a thirty minute break.

3-6 6:00-7:30

The disco will be run by Dance2BFit.

Children will receive entry, a sausage sizzle and drink for $5.50. Names will be ticked off and children will receive their meal tickets as they arrive. Entry alone is $3.00. Other food and drink will be available for purchase as well.

Please place your money in the attached envelope, indicate on the front what is required and return to school by Friday 4th December.

Please note that no student will be allowed to leave at the end of the night without a parent.

Hello again everyone,

Thank you to the 80 families who responded to our recent survey and took the time to make further comments and suggestions. Overall the responses were extremely affirming and constructive. Naturally, some parents also identified specific areas of concern which we will examine more closely in our planning for 2010. Included below is a snapshot of some of your responses.

95% of parents agreed or strongly agreed that their children enjoyed going to school and many made very positive comments regarding programs such as Crunch and Sip, dance, gymnastics, excursions, sport, fitness and technology.

95% said that teachers were approachable and interested in discussing their children’s needs. There were many positive comments about the quality of our teachers, describing them as hardworking and caring. Some parents were concerned about the ratio of female to male teachers. Current DET policy to staff schools centrally and the low number of males choosing primary teaching as a career contribute to these concerns.

98% felt that the school was a safe environment for their children but some said bullying was a concern. As part of the student satisfaction survey this year we asked the children to comment specifically about bullying ie whether they are bullied, by whom and to pinpoint areas of the school or times of the day when bullying occurs. This data will be used to support anti-bullying programs in 2010 and to consider how best to address bullying behaviour.

Positive responses were also made about school leadership, the school’s reward system, the image of the school in the community and the usefulness of the school newsletter as a source of information. Areas identified as concerns for some parents included the school uniform and homework policies and access to extra help for children with difficulties. Further results will be available in this year’s Annual School Report early in 2010.

Enjoy your week.

Building works and improvements have continued to progress around the school over the past few weeks with our new evacuation bell system now working and new toilets being installed in the senior girls’ toilet this weekend.

Progress on the hall has been continuing steadily with trenches being dug and essential services installed prior to pouring the slab floor. During this digging the construction company unearthed some small pieces of cement sheeting in a digging area that had been out of bounds to students and staff.

On Friday the company advised that in accordance with WorkCover regulations, the fragments were to be removed and all open surfaces sprayed with an adhesive material and covered with a special geo-tech fabric, making the area safe. These measures have been taken but the area is still out of bounds as the DET is working with the construction company to ensure that the area is cleared of all such material when the summer holiday starts, so that progress can then continue on our hall.

Please feel free to see me at school or give me a call on 4284 1472 if you have any questions.

Enjoy your week.

Traffic Safety

Please take the greatest care when driving near the school grounds especially between 8:30 and 9:00 and at 3:00 when children and parents are entering and leaving the school. Last week, an accident which could have seriously hurt one of our students was narrowly avoided. Parking is available along Royal Crescent and the new eastern gate will now be open every day. Please use this gate wherever possible to avoid congestion in Corinda Road. Parents are once again reminded that significant fines apply for parking in the restricted zones outside the school.

School Development Days 17th and 18th December

The last day of school for students will be Wednesday 16th December while teachers and office staff will continue until 3:00pm Friday 18th. These two school development days will be used for teacher professional learning, Stage Team planning and whole-school organisation for the coming year. This will mean that we can hit the ground running on day one 2010.

2010 Best Start Kindergarten Assessment

In 2007 the DET introduced a state-wide assessment program called Best Start for all children entering Kindergarten. Our Kinder teachers will attend two training days before the end of the year and at the beginning of next year they will look at each child’s early reading and writing, their ability to communicate with others, and how they recognise and work with numbers, groups and patterns. Best Start will be a wonderful additional tool in assisting our teachers to optimise each child’s early literacy and numeracy development. More information about Best Start will be provided to our new Kindergarten parents at the Parent Information morning on Wednesday 2nd December.

Elections for 2010 School Student Executive

The election for our 2010 captains, vice captains and prefects will be held on Tuesday 17th November. Year 5 students have been asked to let Mr Cummins know by tomorrow morning if they would like to nominate as a candidate for election.

Sharing, Caring and Supporting the Community

Over the next few weeks the WEPS school community will be involved in supporting 3 worthy causes, all for non-profit organizations.

Please help by giving:

Gifts for children (eg: toys, books, activity sets)

Hello again everyone,

The end of the school year is fast approaching and we are busy planning for 2010.

At this stage we will be enrolling 35 new Kindergarten students and our numbers are hovering at around 306 students for the coming year. This will mean that we will be staffed for only 12 classes in 2010 and unfortunately we will also lose one day of library time, taking us back to 3 days/week.

If your child will not be attending WEPS next year, please let their teacher know as soon as possible. Similarly, if you have a concern about the class your child will be entering in 2010 please put this in writing and forward it to me. The staff will consider all such issues when forming classes within the constraints of our student numbers, the grade compositions that are possible and the number of teaching staff available to us.

Please feel free to see me or give me a call on 42841472 if you have any questions.

Enjoy your week.

Hello again everyone,

From time to time parents or other members of the school community may come into conflict with one another, causing frustration and anxiety for both parties.

It is therefore necessary to have procedures that will help solve problems so that a safe and harmonious school environment is maintained. The best results usually flow from working together.

At no time should a parent approach another parent or their child in an attempt to deal with an issue.

If you encounter a difficulty with another parent, please make an appointment as soon as possible to see me and discuss the matter. In this way concerns can be dealt with sensitively and confidentially and in an open and fair manner. Furthermore, the rights of all parties can be respected and upheld and an agreed solution can be reached.

If your concern is about the academic progress or welfare of your own child please contact your child’s teacher in the first instance to clarify information and/or to make an appointment for an interview. Teachers are always happy to discuss your child’s needs with you. Of course, for concerns of a more serious nature, I can be contacted at the office on 42841472.

Enjoy your week.

Hello again,

It has been a busy Term 3 with so many terrific things achieved by our school with students, teachers and parents working together.

Term 4 is shaping up to be just as busy even though it is only 9 weeks long and the last week will finish for students on Wednesday 16th December.

Next term kicks off with the Special Swimming Scheme starting for Years 2 and 3 on day one and continuing for two weeks. Kindergarten transition will also continue during weeks 1-3 and then again in weeks 6 and 7. Year 6 will be visiting Woonona High School for their official orientation activities later in the term.

This will be Year 6’s last term at primary school and lots of exciting activities have been planned for them including camp in Week 7, a visit to Jamberoo Fun Park and the Year 6 Farewell in the last week.

Five of our students will be representing our school for the first time at the Wollongong Instrumental Festival which will be held on October 29. Congratulations Samantha, Joshua, Lachlan, Bridget and Leon.

Of course there will be all the usual activities with some exciting excursions already organised, fortnightly assemblies, special presentation day, end of year disco and some very special family fun activities organised by hard-working P and C.

In the meantime, have a restful and enjoyable beak and I look forward to seeing you all when school returns on Monday 19th October.

Enjoy your week.

Hello again everyone,

I am pleased to announce that Manteena Pty Ltd, a local construction company located in Fairy Meadow, has been awarded the contract for the construction of our new hall, covered way and canteen.

Construction is due to commence around 24/25 September 2009 with the set-up of temporary fencing, site shed and amenities (site establishment).

Please note that there will be increased truck movement around the school in particular along Royal Crescent during the construction phase which is expected to continue until June 2010.

As you can imagine, there will be a great deal of activity in this area with trucks picking up and dropping off materials so it would be greatly appreciated if parents could avoid parking in the area directly adjacent to the construction site access points, particularly along Royal Crescent near the existing netball courts.

While there will be the inevitable inconveniences, the hall and other facilities will be a wonderful addition to our school. If you would like to know more about the project or see the final plans, please feel free to talk with me any morning or ring to make an appointment on 42841472.

Enjoy your week.

Fundraising Trivia Night

The Fundraising Team would like to send out a big thanks to the families and friends of our school who came along and supported our trivia night on Saturday night. The night was a great success thanks to your generous support and raised in excess of $4,000!! We would also like to send out a big thanks to our wonderful markers who did a fantastic job. A reminder to those who had the winning silent auction bids that your prize can be paid for and picked up from the office. Congratulations to our raffle winners – 3rd Prize Margi Gormly, 2nd Prize Charles, 1st Prize Lisa Davidson.
Assembly This Thursday

Come along and see what Kinder have in store when they perform at this week’s assembly. It’s wild! Assembly starts at 9:15 and everyone is welcome.

Creep Crawlies

Once again, these annoying pests are in our school looking for clean hair in which to make a home. Unfortunately they are encouraged by the recent warm and humid weather conditions. Please check your child’s hair carefully each day while lice are about and if you find any, please treat them promptly. Information is available from the school office. Tying up long hair, using gel or hairspray and spraying inside hats with teatree oil or similar preparations available at the chemist may also help deter infection. If we are all on the lookout and we act quickly at the first sign of a problem we can work together to help to solve this frustrating problem.

Early Arrivers

There are an increasing number of students in the playground prior to the 8:30am bell. Please be aware that there is no supervision of students prior to 8:30 and that the school cannot take responsibility for problems which may occur before this time. Any student arriving before 8:30 must sit on the seats under the COLA until Mrs Liddle arrives for duty.

Principal’s Morning Tea

Invitations will go out this week for Term 3 Principal’s Morning Tea which will be held on Wednesday 30th September. Thank you in advance to Mrs Joel and her band of helpers who always provide a ‘feast’ for our award winners. Please let Mrs Liddle know in advance if your child has any food intolerances.

Year 2 Special Swimming Program Reminder.

2009 NAPLAN Results

Hello again everyone,

In May this year our Year 3 and 5 students sat for the National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) and will receive their official results today. As reported in the media last Friday, NSW students continue to achieve among the best in Australia and this is reflected in the 2009 WEPS results where each child’s results are compared to both the national and school average.

In Year 3, results are reported in 6 achievement bands with 6 being the highest. Overall, Year 3 students scored very well across all areas of literacy and numeracy. In reading, writing and spelling more than half scored in bands 5 and 6 and in grammar and punctuation, 62% scored in these top two bands. Similar results were achieved in the numeracy strands.

In Year 5, results are reported in 6 achievement bands, beginning with band 3 and ending with band 8, the highest. In overall literacy most students scored in bands 5 and 6 and a similar result was achieved across the specific strands of reading, writing, spelling and punctuation. In overall Numeracy and across the specific strands of number patterns/algebra and measurement/data/space/geometry the majority of students again scored in the middle bands.

There were some outstanding personal performances in both years with some students achieving straight band 6s in Year 3 and straight band 8s in Year 5. Congratulations to these boys and girls.

Further analysis of our school’s results will take place over the next term and will be one of many factors considered in planning for the needs of our students in 2010.

Enjoy your week.

MobilePhones

Students are not permitted to bring mobile phones to school. Where there may be extenuating or extraordinary circumstances for bringing a mobile phone, it must be accompanied by a request from a parent and left at the office at 9:00 and picked up by the student at home time. If a parent needs to contact a student urgently or vice versa during the normal school day this must be done via the school office.

Illawarra Mercury Hot Seat – Attention all Students!

Fancy having your picture in the newspaper? Well here is your chance. Six lucky children will be selected from WEPS to appear in the Illawarra Mercury. To be in the running, you need to fill out a questionnaire about your reading. These questionnaires are available from the library. I will read through them all and select six. If you are successful you will be taken to the Mercury to have your photo taken in Week 1 Term 4. The pictures will be published one per week from November 10 onwards. Your photo will be superimposed against a photo of the place you said you would like to go in the questionnaire. I will need all completed questionnaires by the 23rd September 2009.
