Final P&C Meeting Of 2010

Hello again everyone,

The final meeting of our P&C will be held at Woonona Bulli RSL on Tuesday 8th December. There will be a brief meeting followed by dinner and drinks.

I would like to extend a sincere thankyou to the hardworking P&C executive, to all the parents who made it along to the meetings and to everyone who has supported their efforts throughout the year whether through helping in the canteen or uniform shop, helping with stalls and fundraisers, purchasing tickets, cookies or sunscreen or attending fundraising activities such as the bus trips, Trivia Night and upcoming Family Feast and Carols evening.

If you are not already involved I urge you to come along in 2010 to find out what the P&C Association at WEPS is all about. It is a wonderful way to both support the school through fundraising and to be involved in the school’s decision making process.

Enjoy your week.

School Numbers For 2010

The process of organising classes for 2010 continues. We currently have 293 students allowing us to form 12 classes.

In keeping with compulsory DET limits on class sizes in K-2, Kinder classes can have only 20 students and Years 1 and 2, 22 and 24 respectively. In Years 3-6 there will need to be a number of composite classes and numbers will be tight in every class.

Our overall numbers will need to rise to well over 300 by early February for a 13th class to be formed but this seems unlikely at this stage.

Thankyou to the parents who have made written requests regarding their child’s placement in 2010. Please be aware however that these can only be accommodated where class numbers and overall class structures allow.

World Vision Fund Raiser

Thankyou to everyone who supported the gold coin mufti day last Friday. Due to your generosity we were able to raise $410 to support our student, Rita Jean. A wonderful effort everyone!

Boardies Day

Another great cause is Boardies Day this Friday in support of Woonona Surf Life Saving Club. The children are encouraged to come dressed on their brightest board shorts and to donate a gold coin for the privilege. Surf life savers do a wonderful job in keeping us safes on the beach all summer and this is one way we can say thankyou.

“Toys ‘n’ Tucker”

Thanks to everyone who has sent in toys and food for this worthy cause. Any remaining donations need to be at school by this Friday.

Christmas Disco

The Christmas disco will be held at Russell Vale Community Hall on Monday 7th December. There will be two sessions with a thirty minute break.

K-2    4:00-5:30

3-6    6:00-7:30

The disco will be run by Dance2BFit.

Children will receive entry, a sausage sizzle and drink for $5.50.  Names will be ticked off and children will receive their meal tickets as they arrive. Entry alone is $3.00. Other food and drink will be available for purchase as well.

Please place your money in the attached envelope, indicate on the front what is required and return to school by Friday 4th December.

Please note that no student will be allowed to leave at the end of the night without a parent.

Parent Survey Results

Hello again everyone,

Thank you to the 80 families who responded to our recent survey and took the time to make further comments and suggestions. Overall the responses were extremely affirming and constructive. Naturally, some parents also identified specific areas of concern which we will examine more closely in our planning for 2010. Included below is a snapshot of some of your responses.

95% of parents agreed or strongly agreed that their children enjoyed going to school and many made very positive comments regarding programs such as Crunch and Sip, dance, gymnastics, excursions, sport, fitness and technology.

95% said that teachers were approachable and interested in discussing their children’s needs. There were many positive comments about the quality of our teachers, describing them as hardworking and caring. Some parents were concerned about the ratio of female to male teachers. Current DET policy to staff schools centrally and the low number of males choosing primary teaching as a career contribute to these concerns.

98% felt that the school was a safe environment for their children but some said bullying was a concern. As part of the student satisfaction survey this year we asked the children to comment specifically about bullying ie whether they are bullied, by whom and to pinpoint areas of the school or times of the day when bullying occurs. This data will be used to support anti-bullying programs in 2010 and to consider how best to address bullying behaviour.

Positive responses were also made about school leadership, the school’s reward system, the image of the school in the community and the usefulness of the school newsletter as a source of information. Areas identified as concerns for some parents included the school uniform and homework policies and access to extra help for children with difficulties. Further results will be available in this year’s Annual School Report early in 2010.

Enjoy your week.

Building Update

Building works and improvements have continued to progress around the school over the past few weeks with our new evacuation bell system now working and new toilets being installed in the senior girls’ toilet this weekend.

Progress on the hall has been continuing steadily with trenches being dug and essential services installed prior to pouring the slab floor.  During this digging the construction company unearthed some small pieces of cement sheeting in a digging area that had been out of bounds to students and staff.

On Friday the company advised that in accordance with WorkCover regulations, the fragments were to be removed and all open surfaces sprayed with an adhesive material and covered with a special geo-tech fabric, making the area safe.  These measures have been taken but the area is still out of bounds as the DET is working with the construction company to ensure that the area is cleared of all such material when the summer holiday starts, so that progress can then continue on our hall.

Please feel free to see me at school or give me a call on 4284 1472 if you have any questions.

Enjoy your week.

Parent Writing Survey

Our area for curriculum evaluation this year is writing. Please complete and return the enclosed survey by the end of next week. The survey can be returned to your child’s teacher or placed directly in the office box. Surveys are anonymous. Thank you in anticipation of your assistance.

Traffic Safety

Please take the greatest care when driving near the school grounds especially between 8:30 and 9:00 and at 3:00 when children and parents are entering and leaving the school. Last week, an accident which could have seriously hurt one of our students was narrowly avoided. Parking is available along Royal Crescent and the new eastern gate will now be open every day. Please use this gate wherever possible to avoid congestion in Corinda Road. Parents are once again reminded that significant fines apply for parking in the restricted zones outside the school.

School Development Days 17th and 18th December

The last day of school for students will be Wednesday 16th December while teachers and office staff will continue until 3:00pm Friday 18th. These two school development days will be used for teacher professional learning, Stage Team planning and whole-school organisation for the coming year. This will mean that we can hit the ground running on day one 2010.

2010 Best Start Kindergarten Assessment

In 2007 the DET introduced a state-wide assessment program called Best Start for all children entering Kindergarten. Our Kinder teachers will attend two training days before the end of the year and at the beginning of next year they will look at each child’s early reading and writing, their ability to communicate with others, and how they recognise and work with numbers, groups and patterns. Best Start will be a wonderful additional tool in assisting our teachers to optimise each child’s early literacy and numeracy development. More information about Best Start will be provided to our new Kindergarten parents at the Parent Information morning on Wednesday 2nd December.

Elections for 2010 School Student Executive

The election for our 2010 captains, vice captains and prefects will be held on Tuesday 17th November. Year 5 students have been asked to let Mr Cummins know by tomorrow morning if they would like to nominate as a candidate for election.

Sharing, Caring and Supporting the Community

Over the next few weeks the WEPS school community will be involved in supporting 3 worthy causes, all for non-profit organizations.

  • A gold coin mufti day on Friday 20th November to raise funds to support Rita Jean the child sponsored by the school through the World Vision organisation. This event is organised through our SRC.
  • A gold coin mufti day on Friday 27th November to support Boardies Day with funds going directly to our local surf lifesaving club, Woonona.
  • Acting as a collection point for Anglicare’s “Toys ‘n’ Tucker” donations to families in need this Christmas. More information follows in this newsletter.

Please help by giving:

  • Gifts for children (eg: toys, books, activity sets)
  • Gifts for teenagers (eg: sporting gear, games, toiletry sets)

Planning For 2010

Hello again everyone,

The end of the school year is fast approaching and we are busy planning for 2010.

At this stage we will be enrolling 35 new Kindergarten students and our numbers are hovering at around 306 students for the coming year. This will mean that we will be staffed for only 12 classes in 2010 and unfortunately we will also lose one day of library time, taking us back to 3 days/week.

If your child will not be attending WEPS next year, please let their teacher know as soon as possible. Similarly, if you have a concern about the class your child will be entering in 2010 please put this in writing and forward it to me. The staff will consider all such issues when forming classes within the constraints of our student numbers, the grade compositions that are possible and the number of teaching staff available to us.

Please feel free to see me or give me a call on 42841472 if you have any questions.

Enjoy your week.

Farewell Mr T

Sadly, this will be Mr Thompson’s last week with us. We really appreciate Mr T’s enthusiasm for his chosen profession and the care he has given to our children during his time with us. We hope to see him at WEPS again in the near future.

Weekend Trespassers

Please be on the lookout over weekends and during school breaks for individuals or groups entering the school grounds. This is trespassing and will be dealt with seriously by the police. School security can be contacted on 1300 88 00 21.

Stage 3 Water Safety Challenge This Friday

Please ensure that all Stage 3 students have returned their permission notes before Friday. Students will be walking to and from Woonona Pool on Friday morning and returning for recess. Testing is a DET directive and therefore compulsory for any students going to camp or attending the Jamberoo Fun Park excursion later this term.

They’re In The Hot Seat!

Six students from WEPS have been chosen to talk about their favourite books in the ‘Hot Seat’ section of ‘IQ’ in the Illawarra Mercury. Well done to Alexandra Blunden, Zoe Anderson, Cooper Walker-O’Loughlan, Ruby Thompson, Emily Hilton and Holly Burton who will be travelling to the Mercury tomorrow to have their photos taken. How exciting! Thanks to Ms Thompson for organising the competition for the best book reports.

Thanks Enviro Group.

Thankyou to Jennifer Bean and Ann Burbrook, two of our tireless parent gardeners who braved an early morning start last Friday to purchase plants for our gardens at the Wollongong Botanic Garden plant sale. If you are able to assist with planting tomorrow morning Jennifer and Ann would be very grateful for your help. We also still have a mountain of mulch to be moved. If anyone is able to assist please give Mrs Liddle a call on 42841472.

Scrap Paper.

Thanks to everyone who sent along scrap paper. We now have plenty to keep us going for quite some time.

WEPS COOKBOOK

Can’t decide on which recipe to submit for our cookbook – then submit a few!!!!!

Come on, lets all become involved in this exciting and delicious WEPS Cookbook.  It would be fantastic if every family could put in at least one of their favourite recipes.

You can drop them off to the uniform shop on Monday, Wednesday or Friday mornings or you can send them to Renee at caitlin1@aapt.net.au

Remember to have the children decorate/illustrate on an A4 sheet of paper, include your family name and children names with the recipe.  Also, you can submit a name for our cookbook – the name selected will win an exciting prize.  If you have any queries, please call Renee 0431 458 798.
