Newsletter Term 3 – week 7
Work Around The School
You will all have noticed work beginning to take place around our school. This began last week with removal of a number of trees in the area outside the senior toilet block. These trees were diseased and storm-damaged and were removed to ensure the safety of students, staff and school visitors. There are also ongoing issues in this area with drainage and clogging of pipes and gutters by the trees’ leaves and roots. In a fortnight drainage works will begin to remediate the flooding problems here. Once all the drainage works are complete we will be able to beautify the area with edging, low growing grasses, shrubs and mulch and eventually return it to the children as a safe, attractive and interesting eating and playing area.
This week work will also begin on the refurbishment of the toilet blocks with painting, tiling and other plumbing works to be carried out over the next few months. Eventually all painted surfaces outside the toilet blocks will be repainted along with gutters and eaves and the covered walkway which will also be painted and have clear light panels inserted into its roof to improve the look of this whole structure.
Last week I attended a meeting about our school hall. While no exact date of commencement has been set, work is scheduled to begin in the not too distant future. I will keep you up to date about further developments as I am informed of them. In the meantime if you have any questions about the works please feel free to give me a call or see me in the playground on any morning except Tuesday when I am at the weekly Administration meeting.
Enjoy your week.

Southern Stars
A huge congratulations to all our boys and girls who participated in Southern Stars over the weekend. As usual the show was spectacular, showcasing the wonderful performing talent of our region’s public school students. Thankyou to all the parents who made the many trips to the Entertainment Centre to deliver the children to the rehearsals and performances and of course to Mrs DiBello and Mrs Harris-Cross for their dedication to the program. It was also very gratifying to hear WEPS performers congratulated for their excellent behaviour behind the scenes. Well done everyone!
National Literacy and Numeracy Week. Reading Counts at WEPS
Thank you to those who came along and joined in the National Literacy and Numeracy Week activities on Tuesday. It is great to see children, parents and children working together in such a positive environment. The feedback from teachers indicates that it was a worthwhile experience and the children enjoyed the activities.
The Guess My Number and Guess My Weight competitions will finish up tomorrow with winners announced after recess. Remember, $1 a guess or 3 guesses for $2 – all money to go to World Vision to help fund the training of a teacher in a disadvantaged country.
Year 2 Special Swimming Program Reminder.
Please don’t forget that this program starts on the first day back in Term 3, so all permission notes and money needs to be returned well before the end of this term. The cost is $60 which covers bus fare for the ten days of the program and pool entry.
Assembly This Thursday.
This week’s award winners will be the first to receive our new merit cards. The Southern Stars dancers will also perform for us this week. Everyone is welcome.
P and C meeting This Tuesday Night.
Please meet in the school staffroom at 7pm.
Boori Pryor This Wednesday
This renowned children’s author and entertainer will be in our school on Wednesday. The cost of the performance is $4 per student.
Uniform and Footwear and Policy
Despite numerous reminders from teachers a number of children are continuing to wear canvas slip-ons and skate shoes to school. These shoes do not supply the necessary support for feet and ankles during fitness and sport activities. For safety reasons, students who are wearing these shoes will not be allowed to participate in sport or fitness activities. School shoes and joggers which can be securely laced are the only shoes to be worn to school. Jewellery other than ear sleepers or studs and nail polish are also inappropriate school wear.
Illawarra Mercury Hot Seat – Attention all Students!
Fancy having your picture in the newspaper? Well here is your chance. Six lucky children will be selected from WEPS to appear in the Illawarra Mercury. To be in the running, you need to fill out a questionnaire about your reading. These questionnaires are available from the library. I will read through them all and select six. If you are successful you will be taken to the Mercury to have your photo taken in Week 1 Term 4. The pictures will be published one per week from November 10 onwards. Your photo will be superimposed against a photo of the place you said you would like to go in the questionnaire. I will need all completed questionnaires by the 23rd September 2009.
Happy Reading
Donna Thompson
Teacher Librarian
A Bouquet For Ms Thompson!
It is always nice to be acknowledged for a job well done as our own Ms Thompson was recently in the Illawarra Mercury.
Teacher Professional Learning
Throughout the year our teachers participate in a variety of professional learning activities. Last week Mrs D’Arcangelo, Mrs Carter and Mrs Harris- Cross attended the regional wrap-up of the Live Life Well @ School program. Along with a number of local schools they reported on our school’s participation in the program (Crunch and Sip, Daily Fitness, Out of the Box program etc) and the success of these initiatives which will be embedded in our ongoing PDHPE programs and initiatives.
Environment group
Mulch has arrived! This week we will be preparing the gardens for summer! We will be putting mulch on the gardens, checking the plant guards (after all this wind) and filling the frog ponds. Lots to do! Many hands make light work – we would love to see you. Meet at the flagpole at 9am and help for half an hour. Thank you.
Headphones for Tech.
This term we have been creating electronic books. Later in the term we will be creating music with Garageband. Your child would benefit from using headphones for these activities. Please allow your child to bring some headphones (just cheapies) to tech so they can engage and create more fully. Thanks, Suzie Wynn-Jones.
WEPS COOKBOOK
Have you been looking through your favourite recipes? Can’t decide on which recipe to submit for our cookbook – then submit a few!!!!!
Come on, lets all become involved in this exciting and delicious WEPS Cookbook. It would be fantastic if every family could put in at least one of their favourite recipes.
You can drop them off to the uniform shop on Monday, Wednesday or Friday mornings or you can send them to Renee at caitlin1@aapt.net.au
Remember to have the children decorate/illustrate on an A4 sheet of paper, include your family name and children names with the recipe. Also, you can submit a name for our cookbook – the name selected will win an exciting prize. If you have any queries, please call Renee 0431 458 798.
