Newsletter Term 3 – week 4
Upcoming Literacy and Numeracy Events.
Next Wednesday 26th August we will be holding our annual Book Week celebration activities. Book Week is the longest running children’s festival in Australia, celebrating its 64th birthday in 2009. This year the theme is ‘Book Safari’. Ms Thompson has organised some terrific activities for Wednesday 26th August starting at 11:20. There will be lots of exciting activities including a juggling show, safari book hunt, library displays and dress-up parade. We hope that you can come along, join in the fun and get ‘wild about reading’ on our ‘Book Safari’!
Another exciting event is National Literacy and Numeracy Week which will be held nationwide from the 31st August to the 4th September. During this week schools around Australia will be involved in a variety of projects related to maths and literacy.
Ms Pechey recently applied for, and received a grant of $1000 to cover the cost of our project, ‘Reading Counts At WEPS’. Thankyou Ms Pechey! This enabled us to purchase many new picture books for the library and special teaching resources for our teachers to use in Literacy and Numeracy Week.
For ‘Reading Counts At WEPS’ we will be inviting parents, grandparents and carers to school on Tuesday 1st September to participate in classroom activities so keep that date free to join us and see how ‘Reading Counts At WEPS’! Watch out for more information in next week’s newsletter.
Have an enjoyable week.

Canteen Crisis!
Sadly we are now almost at crisis point with volunteers for our canteen. With more parents working and a range of other factors, it is becoming more and more difficult to staff the canteen. Please read the enclosed note carefully as we need to come up with some solutions if we want to maintain our excellent, healthy and cost effective canteen service.
Premier’s Spelling Bee
Due to clashes in our very busy Term 3 calendar the school Spelling Bee will now be held on Friday 28th August. Parents are welcome to attend the Spelling Bee which will commence at 9:10 am under the COLA.
As sponsor of the NSW Spelling Bee, Westpac are giving away a ‘Top Spelling Tips’ booklet which you can receive free from your local Westpac branch.
Come on a Book Safari at Woonona East
All parents and friends are invited to join us for our Book Week extravaganza on Wednesday 26th August at 11:20am. Students are asked to come dressed in safari gear or dressed as a jungle animal. They also need to make and carry a sign showing their favourite book find in our parade.
Other activities on the day include a Juggling Show presented by Erin Masters from the Half High Circus and Circus, a rendition of ‘Going on a Book Hunt’ presented by 4P using the rhyme ‘Going on a Bear Hunt’ as inspiration, a picnic lunch with your children (the canteen will have some great safari snacks available), a safari book hunt around the school which starts at the library where you can pick up your clues and Book Week games and craft in the library.
As part of our festivities on the day we will be having a Safari Jeep Display in the library. Children are asked if they could make a safari jeep from recycled materials.
Book Week is all about bringing books, parents, and children together. So come along and join in our celebrations. I look forward to meeting you and seeing all the children’s wonderful creations.

P&C Cleanup Day
The P&C is keen to organise another cleanup day early in Term 3 on Saturday 31st October. Please put this date in your calendar and try to come along. Our last day in Term 1 was a great success.
Waste Audit
Last term 3/4L and officers from Wollongong Council completed a ‘waste audit’ of our school. For all the details, see our enclosed report. And remember, to cut back on packaging we can use
- paper wrap, brown paper recycled bags but no plastic bags or aluminium foil
- reusable containers that get taken home and washed
- lunch boxes that have lots of separate sections
- reusable forks and spoons
- drink bottles with water that can be used each day.
Thankyou P&C!
Thankyou to our P&C for their generous donation of $1000 which will cover the cost of costume materials and bus fare for our Southern Stars students.
Tiger Shield
Unfortunately Wooona East will not be entering teams in this year’s Tiger Shield. Thank you to all those students who expressed an interest in playing. The numbers were not sufficient to enter competitive teams.
Soccer Socks
Thanks to Doug Hamill for donating a box of socks for school sporting teams. The boys looked very impressive last Friday during PSSA sport at Ocean Park last week. As with the soccer shirts, the boys are expected to look after these over the course of the PSSA competition and wash and return them after the last game.
PSSA Sport
A reminder that the permission note that students took home had the wrong date for Round 3 on it. Round 3 is on the 28th August, not the 4th September as stated on the note.
Book Club News
Yet again another fantastic selection of books will be on offer, ranging from titles such as Boys Only and Girls Only, to books about knitting (which seems to be the latest craze), drawing, paper lantern making, crazy science projects and cup cake creations. Please return all book club orders to the office by Wednesday 19th August. Happy Reading.
Time to Return MS Readathon Sponsorship
A big thankyou to the families and friends of our WEPS participants who have sponsored their reading during the 30th year of the MS Readathon! As WEPS students begin to close their books on this year’s program it is nearing the time to return sponsorship funds and collect their hard-earned certificate and reading rewards. With an official money-due date of August 31st, the fastest way to return sponsorship is online with the help of a parent. Students can also return the Completion Form (which they received in the post recently) and any receipt books sent to them. If you have misplaced your form a replacement can be downloaded from www.msreadathon.org.au or call 1300 677 323).
