Performing Arts at WEPS

Here at Woonona East Public School, we are very fortunate to be able to provide our students with a range of activities in the performing arts.  In addition to in class drama, dance and music activities, children have the opportunity to be involved in choir, school band and dance as part of the Southern Stars performance.

These activities give our boys and girls an opportunity to experience something ‘out of the ordinary’ and to develop talents and confidence in their own abilities.  Our school’s involvement also raises our positive profile in the community and engenders school pride.

I was exceptionally proud of our Stage 2 choir who performed superbly last Tuesday night under the direction of Mrs D’Arcangelo and Ms Pechey.  Thank you to all the parents who supported the children and teachers in their efforts both before and on the evening.  We will have another chance to enjoy their performance at this Thursday’s assembly.

None of these activities would be possible without the expertise and enthusiasm of our teachers and the fantastic support that our parents provide, not only financially but in so many practical ways.

Thank you everyone for your continuing support of the performing arts at WEPS.

Choral Festival

What a wonderful night!  The children look and sounded fantastic.  Congratulations to the children for their hard work throughout the year and the parents for their efforts too.  We will perform some of our songs at this week’s assembly for anyone who was unable to attend the concert last Tuesday night.  Well done children and thank you teachers for all your hard work, especially Ms Pechey for working with the 2nds.

Notes will be accepted tomorrow for any students interested in competing.

PSSA Dates

Please note that there was a mistake on the PSSA permission note that went home last week.  Round 3 will be on the 28th August NOT the 4th September as stated.  The 4th September is the Southern Stars performance.

Choir Pizza Picnic

To celebrate our choir’s achievements we will be having a pizza picnic at Nicholson Park this Thursday afternoon for choir members. Children will not need to bring their lunch on Thursday. If any child is unable to have pizza, they are welcome to bring their own food to the picnic. Mrs D’Arcangelo and Ms Pechey.

Assembly

Term 3 whole-school assemblies begin again on Thursday this week at 9:15. Our school choir will be performing and everyone is welcome to come along.

Office Closed Tuesday

The school office will be closed on Tuesday 11th August for audit. Money envelopes can still be deposited in the brown box but no other office services will be available. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Expressions of Interest in the Southern Stars Friday Matinee due back Tuesday 11th August.

EOIs went out on Thursday to students in Year 4 and Year 5 and 6 students not performing in Southern Stars. The cost is approximately $20 which includes bus fare and entry. For those who have not seen one of these performances, they are absolutely world-class in terms of performance, staging, lighting etc. and a great experience for kids. It would be wonderful to have a WEPS contingent to cheer on our performers.

Premier’s Spelling Bee

This year our school will participate in the Premier’s Spelling Bee.

The Premier’s Spelling Bee is a fun and educational way for primary students to approach spelling. It includes activities to encourage all students to engage with spelling and to promote improved literacy.

The Premier’s Spelling Bee is open to all children from years 3-6. There are two divisions – Junior for years 3 and 4, and Senior for years 5 and 6. Our school will be able to enter two children in each division for the Regional Finals to be held at Bellambi Public School on Wednesday 30th September.

Classes will hold their own Spelling Bees to determine two representatives from their class to participate in a school Spelling Bee to be held on Friday 21st August. Parents are welcome to attend the school Spelling Bee which will commence at 9:10 am.

Book Club News

Yet again another fantastic selection of books will be on offer.  Ranging from titles such as Boys Only and Girls Only, to books about knitting (which seems to be the latest craze), drawing, paper lantern making, crazy science projects and cup cake creations.  Please return all book club orders to office by Wednesday 19th August.  Thank you.

Happy Reading.

Live Life Well @ School Survey

Over the past 12 months WEPS has been involved in the Live Life Well @ School program, introducing a whole range of initiatives to help raise the community’s awareness of healthy lifestyles. While the teachers already know it has had excellent benefits for our students, we want to know what parents think. Have your say by completing the enclosed survey and return it to school by this Friday. Feel free to comment or make suggestions on any aspect of the program. Surveys are anonymous so there is no need to add your name.

Kindergarten Enrolments for 2010

We will soon be organising our transition to school program for 2010 Kinder boys and girls so please let us know as soon as possible if your child will be attending WEPS or pass on this message to neighbours or friends. Parents will be notified in the next few weeks regarding the organisation for our transition program which will begin on Friday Week 9.

Dance2BFit

The first lesson of Dance 2BFit was a huge success last Monday. The cost is $22.50 for the full program or $2.50/week.

Kind Donations

A special thankyou to Mr Hamill for his kind donation of soccer socks and to Ms Walker for her generous donation towards our Book Week prizes. Thanks also to Mr Myer for all the jobs he does around our school.

Band

There will be no band tomorrow Tuesday 11th August.  Band will start again on Tuesday 18th August (Week4).  Fees will therefore be $49 (7X$7) for this term. Thankyou parents for your continuing support of our school band.

Snap Happy

With digital cameras, it’s now so easy to share photos with family and friends online. But how do you control where they end up and how can you remove material once it’s out there?

The latest issue of Click, the DET’s guide to technology for parents, has some great advice on keeping your family’s photos safe from prying eyes and some simple ways you can ensure the privacy of people in the photos, especially children.

Go Green With “Nude” Food

Did you know that each child produces approximately 30 kilos of waste per year from their school lunch alone? And imagine this amount multiplied by the number of children in our school!

The latest edition of School Parents ezine is full of ideas on how to go green and how to make a ‘nude food’ lunch box for your child. Nude food is not only low on waste or makes no waste, it’s not processed and therefore it’s healthier and cheaper.

A nude food lunch uses:

  • paper wrap, brown paper recycled bags but no plastic bags or aluminium foil
  • reusable containers that get taken home and washed
  • lunch boxes that have lots of separate sections
  • Reusable forks and spoons
  • drink bottles with water that can be used each day. Find out more at: www.schools.nsw.edu.au/ezine

Kids Café

Term 3 canteen is closed Monday’s and Friday’s.

This weeks lunch special, Hot dog with sauce $2.00, cheese extra 30c.

Would you like to help out this Thursday in our garden?  See you there about 9.15am.  Thank you.
