National Literacy and Numeracy Week.

National Literacy and Numeracy Week (NLNW) is an Australian Government initiative and has been celebrated in all states and territories for the past ten years.

NLNW focuses on literacy and numeracy practices from Kindergarten to Year 10 and celebrates successful literacy and numeracy projects and programs by schools and their local communities. Visit www.nlnw.nsw.edu.au for some great ideas to support your child’s literacy and numeracy learning.

At WEPS this Tuesday we are inviting all parents to visit the school and be part of our Reading Counts At WEPS Day. The children will be engaged in fun activities based on children’s literature, linking both literacy and numeracy (see over for the timetable).

Another NLNW happening this week will include some classes taking part in Reach for the Stars – a yearly project that collects data from schools all around Australia. Last year’s project involved throwing a coin at a target. This year classes around Australia will collect information on their names such as the number of letters in first names, the most common first name initial, the number of vowels in names etc.

And, it’s on again – Guess My Weight and Guess My Number. Each morning and recess from Tuesday the seniors will display a jar full of marbles. The aim is to guess the mass of the jar and how many marbles it contains. Each guess is $1 or three guesses for $2. You may enter as many times as you wish. The winners will receive a giant calculator and a surprise gift. The money raised will be used to help with education in areas less fortunate than ours through World Vision Australia. If we raise $126 we can help train a teacher in an underprivileged country. A further $63 would allow us to buy educational toys for an indigenous community. So dig deep and start guessing.

All great reasons to be part of NLNW this week!

Premier’s Spelling Bee.

Our inaugural Woonona East Spelling Bee was held last Friday. The finalists for stage two (years 3&4) were Tess Hulme, Holly Jones, Emerson Moore, Jay Archer, Georgia Atkinson and Sanna Eriksson. The finalists for stage three (years 5&6) were Teya Storm, Stephen Wallace, Jack Currie, Nikita Portman, Kane McCrae and Sonia Hilliard.

There were some very difficult words to be spelt and all finalists put in a fantastic effort. The audience particularly liked the great attempt at spelling the very difficult, yacht – ‘yought’!

Well done to all our finalists and congratulations to Jack, Nikita, Georgia and Emerson who now go on to represent the school at the regional final on Wednesday, 30th September at Bellambi Public School. Gud luk!

Southern Stars

This Friday and Saturday our wonderful dance troupe will be performing in the Southern Stars spectacular at the Wollongong Entertainment Centre. Good luck to our boys and girls and a huge thankyou to Mrs DiBello and Mrs Harris-Cross for their support and all the parents who have helped out in one way or another. Children going along to watch the performance this Friday should have their $22 in by tomorrow. Tickets for the Friday and

Saturday performances are available through Ticketek.

Year 2 Special Swimming Extra Places.

During the first two weeks of Term 4, Year 2 children will be involved in the Special Swimming Scheme at Corrimal Pool. The cost of the program is $60 which covers bus fare to and from the pool and entry. The swimming lessons are free and conducted by trained DET instructors. This year we have a small number of spare spaces for children in Year 3 who are unable to swim 25 metres confidently. If you would like your child to be involved please pick up a note from the office and send it along with your payment as soon as possible or see Mrs D’Arcangelo for more information.

Office Closed This Tuesday 1st September.

The school office will be closed this Tuesday for staff training. Money and notes can still be placed in the brown box in the foyer.

Premier’s Sporting Challenge.

We are now into the 6th week of the Sporting Challenge and the children are going great guns at keeping themselves active. All K-2 classes are on track to receive their gold award next term and most Yr 3-6 classes are averaging gold medal level each week ie 60 minutes/day of physical activity that makes you ‘huff and puff’. Keep up the great work!

Kindergarten Enrolments.

Transition to school sessions will be starting in the last two weeks of this term and we are hoping to have all our local Kinders enrolled by then. Please pass this message on to any potential WEPS 2010 Kinder parents.

School Zone Road Safety

A reminder to parents that from 1 July 2009 the government has increased fines and loss of demerit points for all driving offences occurring in school zones. We are committed to providing a safe environment for all our students and visitors, so please observe the 40km/h speed limit during school hours and stop in designated drop off areas only.

Going Batty in 1/2C!

Last week 1/2C had a small, furry visitor in their classroom. This turned out to be a sheath tailed bat, a tiny member of the bat family that catches insects on its sticky tail.

We had a bat at school. It had soft fur. It is nocturnal and it sleeps upside down. It was a sheath tailed bat.

It eats insects and a little bit of fruit. By Harmony.

This morning Byron was on his way to school and he saw a bat. He picked it up and rang his mum. Mrs Carter called WIRES.

The bat was cute and cuddly. It had tiny ears and teeth. It had leathery wings. It was shy and had soft fur. It was funny-looking, like a spider.

We looked on the Internet. We found out that it ate insects and occasionally fruit. It uses its tail to catch insects.

It tried to hide in the corner of the box and we called it Jessie.

Today Byron went to school and he found a bat in the gutter. He called Mrs Carter. She got gloves and a towel, but Byron had it in his hands to keep it warm.

The bat had black eyes and sharp little claws and it was very shy.

It is nocturnal. It sleeps in the day and wakes up at night. It is a sheath-tailed bat. They are very small. It had little teeth. We thought it was a baby and we rang WIRES and they came and told us it was fully grown. We called it Jessie. By Caleb.

Environment group

Mulch has arrived!  This week we will be preparing the gardens for summer!  We will be putting mulch on the gardens, checking the plant guards (after all this wind) and filling the frog ponds.  Lots to do!  Many hands make light work – we would love to see you.  Meet at the flagpole at 9am and help for half an hour.  Thank you.

Headphones for tech

This term we have been creating electronic books.  Later in the term we will be creating music with Garageband.  Your child would benefit from using headphones for these activities.  Please allow your child to bring some headphones (just cheapies) to tech so they can engage and create more fully.  Thanks Suzie Wynn-Jones.

Newsletter Term 3 – week 4

Upcoming Literacy and Numeracy Events.

Next Wednesday 26th August we will be holding our annual Book Week celebration activities. Book Week is the longest running children’s festival in Australia, celebrating its 64th birthday in 2009. This year the theme is ‘Book Safari’. Ms Thompson has organised some terrific activities for Wednesday 26th August starting at 11:20. There will be lots of exciting activities including a juggling show, safari book hunt, library displays and dress-up parade. We hope that you can come along, join in the fun and get ‘wild about reading’ on our ‘Book Safari’!

Another exciting event is National Literacy and Numeracy Week which will be held nationwide from the 31st August to the 4th September. During this week schools around Australia will be involved in a variety of projects related to maths and literacy.

Ms Pechey recently applied for, and received a grant of $1000 to cover the cost of our project, ‘Reading Counts At WEPS’. Thankyou Ms Pechey! This enabled us to purchase many new picture books for the library and special teaching resources for our teachers to use in Literacy and Numeracy Week.

For ‘Reading Counts At WEPS’ we will be inviting parents, grandparents and carers to school on Tuesday 1st September to participate in classroom activities so keep that date free to join us and see how ‘Reading Counts At WEPS’! Watch out for more information in next week’s newsletter.

Have an enjoyable week.

Canteen Crisis!

Sadly we are now almost at crisis point with volunteers for our canteen. With more parents working and a range of other factors, it is becoming more and more difficult to staff the canteen. Please read the enclosed note carefully as we need to come up with some solutions if we want to maintain our excellent, healthy and cost effective canteen service.

Premier’s Spelling Bee

Due to clashes in our very busy Term 3 calendar the school Spelling Bee will now be held on Friday 28th August. Parents are welcome to attend the Spelling Bee which will commence at 9:10 am under the COLA.

As sponsor of the NSW Spelling Bee, Westpac are giving away a ‘Top Spelling Tips’ booklet which you can receive free from your local Westpac branch.

Come on a Book Safari at Woonona East

All parents and friends are invited to join us for our Book Week extravaganza on Wednesday 26th August at 11:20am. Students are asked to come dressed in safari gear or dressed as a jungle animal. They also need to make and carry a sign showing their favourite book find in our parade.

Other activities on the day include a Juggling Show presented by Erin Masters from the Half High Circus and Circus, a rendition of ‘Going on a Book Hunt’ presented by 4P using the rhyme ‘Going on a Bear Hunt’ as inspiration, a picnic lunch with your children (the canteen will have some great safari snacks available), a safari book hunt around the school which starts at the library where you can pick up your clues and Book Week games and craft in the library.

As part of our festivities on the day we will be having a Safari Jeep Display in the library. Children are asked if they could make a safari jeep from recycled materials.

Book Week is all about bringing books, parents, and children together. So come along and join in our celebrations. I look forward to meeting you and seeing all the children’s wonderful creations.

Donna Thompson

Teacher Librarian

P&C Cleanup Day

The P&C is keen to organise another cleanup day early in Term 3 on Saturday 31st October. Please put this date in your calendar and try to come along. Our last day in Term 1 was a great success.

Waste Audit

Last term 3/4L and officers from Wollongong Council completed a ‘waste audit’ of our school. For all the details, see our enclosed report. And remember, to cut back on packaging we can use

  • paper wrap, brown paper recycled bags but no plastic bags or aluminium foil
  • reusable containers that get taken home and washed
  • lunch boxes that have lots of separate sections
  • reusable forks and spoons
  • drink bottles with water that can be used each day.

Thankyou P&C!

Thankyou to our P&C for their generous donation of $1000 which will cover the cost of costume materials and bus fare for our Southern Stars students.

Tiger Shield

Unfortunately Wooona East will not be entering teams in this year’s Tiger Shield. Thank you to all those students who expressed an interest in playing. The numbers were not sufficient to enter competitive teams.

Soccer Socks

Thanks to Doug Hamill for donating a box of socks for school sporting teams. The boys looked very impressive last Friday during PSSA sport at Ocean Park last week. As with the soccer shirts, the boys are expected to look after these over the course of the PSSA competition and wash and return them after the last game.

PSSA Sport

A reminder that the permission note that students took home had the wrong date for Round 3 on it. Round 3 is on the 28th August, not the 4th September as stated on the note.

Book Club News

Yet again another fantastic selection of books will be on offer, ranging from titles such as Boys Only and Girls Only, to books about knitting (which seems to be the latest craze), drawing, paper lantern making, crazy science projects and cup cake creations.  Please return all book club orders to the office by Wednesday 19th August. Happy Reading.

Time to Return MS Readathon Sponsorship

A big thankyou to the families and friends of our WEPS participants who have sponsored their reading during the 30th year of the MS Readathon! As WEPS students begin to close their books on this year’s program it is nearing the time to return sponsorship funds and collect their hard-earned certificate and reading rewards. With an official money-due date of August 31st, the fastest way to return sponsorship is online with the help of a parent. Students can also return the Completion Form (which they received in the post recently) and any receipt books sent to them. If you have misplaced your form a replacement can be downloaded from www.msreadathon.org.au or call 1300 677 323).

Live Life Well @ School Survey Reminder

Please don’t forget to your surveys to the box in the school office; blue for parents, white for students. feel free to add your comments on the reverse of the sheet.

School Contributions

It is not too late to make your voluntary contribution to our school. So far we have raised close to $1,505. Half of this will go towards the library to purchase new books and the other half will be used to update reading materials and other classroom resources.

Well Done Laura!

Recently, Laura in 5/6H competed in the NSW Schools Cross Country Championships at Eastern Creek. Laura came in 24th, bettering 71 other girls from the 95 starters. Congratulations Laura on this wonderful effort!

Fantastic Effort Brittany

Last week Brittany in 5/6C represented our school in the NSW PSSA Basketball team at the National Titles.  Overall, NSW came in 5th.  Congratulations Brittany on your wonderful achievement in your chosen sport!

The Animals Are Back!

Thanks to Mr Myer for rejuvenating our playground animals. With some necessary repairs and a new coat of paint and lacquer they are looking as good as ever and the children are enjoying playing with them.

Band

Band will start again this Tuesday 18th August.  Fees will therefore be $49 (7X$7) for this term. Thank you parents for your continuing support of our school band. Children will receive their band fee notes on Tuesday.

Performing Arts at WEPS

Here at Woonona East Public School, we are very fortunate to be able to provide our students with a range of activities in the performing arts.  In addition to in class drama, dance and music activities, children have the opportunity to be involved in choir, school band and dance as part of the Southern Stars performance.

These activities give our boys and girls an opportunity to experience something ‘out of the ordinary’ and to develop talents and confidence in their own abilities.  Our school’s involvement also raises our positive profile in the community and engenders school pride.

I was exceptionally proud of our Stage 2 choir who performed superbly last Tuesday night under the direction of Mrs D’Arcangelo and Ms Pechey.  Thank you to all the parents who supported the children and teachers in their efforts both before and on the evening.  We will have another chance to enjoy their performance at this Thursday’s assembly.

None of these activities would be possible without the expertise and enthusiasm of our teachers and the fantastic support that our parents provide, not only financially but in so many practical ways.

Thank you everyone for your continuing support of the performing arts at WEPS.

Choir Pizza Picnic

To celebrate our choir’s achievements we will be having a pizza picnic at Nicholson Park this Thursday afternoon for choir members. Children will not need to bring their lunch on Thursday. If any child is unable to have pizza, they are welcome to bring their own food to the picnic. Mrs D’Arcangelo and Ms Pechey.

Term 3 whole-school assemblies begin again on Thursday this week at 9:15. Our school choir will be performing and everyone is welcome to come along.

Office Closed Tuesday

The school office will be closed on Tuesday 11th August for audit. Money envelopes can still be deposited in the brown box but no other office services will be available. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Expressions of Interest in the Southern Stars Friday Matinee due back Tuesday 11th August.

EOIs went out on Thursday to students in Year 4 and Year 5 and 6 students not performing in Southern Stars. The cost is approximately $20 which includes bus fare and entry. For those who have not seen one of these performances, they are absolutely world-class in terms of performance, staging, lighting etc. and a great experience for kids. It would be wonderful to have a WEPS contingent to cheer on our performers.

Premier’s Spelling Bee

This year our school will participate in the Premier’s Spelling Bee.

The Premier’s Spelling Bee is a fun and educational way for primary students to approach spelling. It includes activities to encourage all students to engage with spelling and to promote improved literacy.

The Premier’s Spelling Bee is open to all children from years 3-6. There are two divisions – Junior for years 3 and 4, and Senior for years 5 and 6. Our school will be able to enter two children in each division for the Regional Finals to be held at Bellambi Public School on Wednesday 30th September.

Classes will hold their own Spelling Bees to determine two representatives from their class to participate in a school Spelling Bee to be held on Friday 21st August. Parents are welcome to attend the school Spelling Bee which will commence at 9:10 am.

Book Club News

Yet again another fantastic selection of books will be on offer.  Ranging from titles such as Boys Only and Girls Only, to books about knitting (which seems to be the latest craze), drawing, paper lantern making, crazy science projects and cup cake creations.  Please return all book club orders to office by Wednesday 19th August.  Thank you.

Happy Reading.

Live Life Well @ School Survey

Over the past 12 months WEPS has been involved in the Live Life Well @ School program, introducing a whole range of initiatives to help raise the community’s awareness of healthy lifestyles. While the teachers already know it has had excellent benefits for our students, we want to know what parents think. Have your say by completing the enclosed survey and return it to school by this Friday. Feel free to comment or make suggestions on any aspect of the program. Surveys are anonymous so there is no need to add your name.

Snap Happy

With digital cameras, it’s now so easy to share photos with family and friends online. But how do you control where they end up and how can you remove material once it’s out there?

The latest issue of Click, the DET’s guide to technology for parents, has some great advice on keeping your family’s photos safe from prying eyes and some simple ways you can ensure the privacy of people in the photos, especially children.

Go Green With “Nude” Food

Did you know that each child produces approximately 30 kilos of waste per year from their school lunch alone? And imagine this amount multiplied by the number of children in our school!

The latest edition of School Parents ezine is full of ideas on how to go green and how to make a ‘nude food’ lunch box for your child. Nude food is not only low on waste or makes no waste, it’s not processed and therefore it’s healthier and cheaper.

A nude food lunch uses:

  • paper wrap, brown paper recycled bags but no plastic bags or aluminium foil
  • reusable containers that get taken home and washed
  • lunch boxes that have lots of separate sections
  • Reusable forks and spoons
  • drink bottles with water that can be used each day. Find out more at: www.schools.nsw.edu.au/ezine

Kids Café

Term 3 canteen is closed Monday’s and Friday’s.

This weeks lunch special, Hot dog with sauce $2.00, cheese extra 30c.

Would you like to help out this Thursday in our garden?  See you there about 9.15am.  Thank you.

Parent Helpers

Hello again everyone,

Schools are more hectic today than they have ever been, with many struggling to enlist parent support as parents themselves lead busier and busier lives. At WEPS we are extremely fortunate to have wonderful parent helpers who are willing to give their own time to support so many initiatives in the school including the canteen, uniform shop, fundraising, helping in classrooms and working on the school buildings and environment to make them safe and attractive for our boys and girls.

One of the most demanding volunteer jobs in our school is that of canteen coordinator and Toni Joel currently does a fantastic job of ensuring that our students always have access to nutritious and affordable food and that there are always parents available to prepare lunches and serve in the canteen. Over time Toni has been very ably supported by a number of parents but has now become the sole canteen coordinator. We are now seeking another parent who would be willing to act as co-canteen coordinator. If you are able to support Toni she would love to hear from you and she will be able to explain what is involved in the role.

Another area which is supported by parents is our participation in Southern Stars and I would like to express a huge thankyou to Rosie-Ann Fleming, Lee Rose, Joan Koring, Cindy Harrison, Gay Robinson and Jennifer Portman for the preparation of our Southern Stars costumes.

Congratulations 3DB, 3/4 L and 4P

Last term 3DB, 3/4 L and 4P had a visit from Samantha from the Blind Society.  Samantha talked to the classes about life as a blind person. She brought along her guide dog, Geralee, and told the classes about the training guide dogs go through and how they help blind people.

3DB, 3/4 L and 4P appreciated the trouble Samantha took to get to Woonona from Sydney by train, they really enjoyed the talk and meeting Geralee. The classes then decided to raise money for the Guide Dogs. In one week the three classes raised $211, a massive effort.

Mrs Di Bello, Ms Clarkson and Ms Pechey are very proud that their classes decided to raise the money and that they were able to raise so much in such a short time.

Lifeline Cards

This week Stage 2 and 3 students will receive a Lifeline wallet card courtesy of Lifeline South Coast. This project is supported by the Department of Education and Bluescope Steel. The card is designed to encourage young people or their family members to seek help and call Lifeline in difficult times

Office Closed

The school office will be closed on Tuesday 4th August and the following Tuesday 11th August for stocktake and audit. Money envelopes can still be deposited in the brown box but no other office services will be available. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Band

There will be no band tomorrow (due to the number of students at choir and Southern Stars practice) or next Tuesday 11th August.  Band will start again on Tuesday 18th August (Week4).  Fees will therefore be $49 (7X$7) for this term. Band students have been given their notes today.  Thankyou parents for your continuing support of our school band.

Child Protection Lessons

As part of the PD, Health and PE curriculum, all students will participate in Child Protection lessons during the next semester. These lessons will help children to identify dangerous or uncomfortable situations and help them to seek help from trustworthy adults. The Child Protection lessons have been developed by the Department of Education and Training and are mandatory for all schools. We trust that you will support your child’s participation in the program however, if you do not wish your child to be involved please return the permission note attached to the enclosed note by the end of this week.  If you are happy for your child to participate you need do nothing further with this note.  Please contact Mrs Liddle on 42841472 if you have any questions.

COME ON A BOOK SAFARI WITH OUR NEW BOOK CHAT GROUP!

The theme for Book Week this year is Book Safari so why not join the safari, by means of an informal book chat group. Take an expedition into the magical world you can explore through books. To be involved, all you need to do is read and be willing to chat to others in the group about the book you are reading. Just think about all the new exciting books that await your discovery. I plan to have us meet every second Thursday at second half lunch on even weeks of the school term. There might even be some popcorn involved. Interested? Have any questions? See Ms. Thompson in the library to register, our safari starts this week.

Swine flu update

Human swine influenza (H1N1 Influenza) continues to be a serious threat in our community.

To help avoid the spread of swine flu at school:

  • Please ensure that your child remains at home if he or she has flu symptoms.
  • Take your child to a doctor or hospital immediately if the symptoms worsen or call 000.
  • Encourage your child to practice good hygiene:
  • Cover your mouth when you cough
  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water or use alcohol rubs to avoid cross infection
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick

  • If your child has travelled to a recognised swine flu infection zone and has no flu symptoms and is well, your child is able to attend school.

For the latest information on the swine flu please go to the NSW Health website at: www.emergency.health.nsw.gov.au/swineflu/index.asp or call the Australian Government swine flu hotline on 180 2007.

Fact sheets are available in community languages at: www.emergency.health.nsw.gov.au/swineflu/ethnic/index.asp

Gifted and Talented Workshops

Surviving Cyberbullies what parents need to know.

With all the media surrounding cyberbullying, you might be wondering how to protect your child.

Many kids rely on technology for their social life and won’t risk telling you about cyberbullying if they think you’ll restrict their access to the computer or phone. Make it clear you won’t. Also reinforce the Stop, Block,Tell message:

  • Stop: Tell your child NEVER respond to the bully. Instead, they should take some time out from the conversation to calm down and talk to you.
  • Block: Block the bully and limit communication to close friends. Keep the evidence but contact the site administrator and ask for the abusive comments to be removed ‑ this will stop your child re-reading and re-living the abuse.
  • Tell: One of the most effective things you can do is report bullying to the site administrator. Also tell the school principal. Every NSW public school has an anti-bullying plan.

Keep computers and mobiles in an open area of the house and not in kids’ bedrooms. Late night messages – good or bad – don’t allow kids to get enough sleep to function well at school or socially.

Tiger Shield

The Tiger Shield is a one day tournament organised by Camden Tigers Soccer Club. It will be held on Saturday 12th September at Ron Dine Memorial Reserve, Camden. The tournament is in its 34th year. Primary school teams will be competing on the day in both Boys and Girls competitions, in Senior and Junior divisions.

The Tiger Shield is a tournament aimed at primary school children. The day is organised on a weekend after most junior Saturday competitions have finished and, generally, before summer sporting competitions start. Teams are guaranteed to play at least 3 time modified pool games. If they are successful they progress through quarter finals, semi finals and, ultimately, play for the Tiger Shield in the final.

In 2006 Woonona East Senior Girls team won the “Shield”.

A note will go home today to all students in Year 3-6 who are interested in playing in this tournament. The note must be returned by Monday 10th August.
