Performing Arts

Hello again everyone,

Next term children from Woonona East Public School will be performing in two important local musical events – Southern Stars and the Wollongong Choral Festival.

The children are working hard to learn the required songs and dances and rehearsals will begin soon. This week Mrs D’Arcangelo and Ms Pechey will accompany the Stage 2 choir to Corrimal Primary School for the first cluster group practice with Berkeley PS and Mt Ousley PS who will perform with us on Tuesday 4th August at Anita’s Theatre in Thirroul.

Next Monday Mrs DiBello and Mrs Harris-Cross will accompany 30 of our boys and girls to the first mass dance rehearsal for Southern Stars. Our school will be performing part of the ‘Cat in the Hat’ sequence. The night performance of Southern Stars will be on Friday 4th September at the Wollongong Entertainment Centre.

Congratulations to all these dedicated boys and girls and their teachers and a huge thankyou to parents for their support and encouragement.

Public Speaking Champs

Four children were chosen to represent Woonona East PS at the Multicultural Public Speaking Competition held at Bellambi PS last Wednesday. Liam and Phoebe represented Stage 2 and Lachlan and Rory were the Stage 3 reps. These students reached this level of the competition through their success in our own school’s competition during Education Week. All the children were absolutely fantastic and should feel very proud of themselves. Congratulations to Rory who won his section and will now represent our district at Nowra on 25th August.

Well done children and thankyou to all the parents and teachers involved in preparing them for this event.

Mrs D’Arcangelo

Congratulations Laura!

Last Friday four of our most talented cross-country runners represented the North Wollongong District at the South Coast Carnival held near Nowra. Olivia. Dane, Ben and Laura competed strongly on the day, with Laura taking out 4th place in her division. Special congratulations go to Laura who will now represent the Region at the State Cross Country Carnival.

Reminder – Year 1 and 2 Excursion to Killalea.

The children are really looking forward to their excursion this Wednesday which will support their learning in the unit of work ‘Wet and Dry Environments’. The bus will leave school at 9:00 and return at 2:30. Children need to wear their sports uniform, sturdy shoes and a hat. They will need to bring recess, lunch and drinks in their lunchbox inside their school bag.

Dance 2BFit in Term 3

In Term 3 we will be offering a nine-week dance program for all children K-6. Lessons will be conducted each Monday by experienced dance teachers and children will learn a range of fun dances and dance styles. Lessons are 45 minutes in length.  The program has been very well received in many local schools and really enjoyed by the children. The cost of the program is $2:50 per week or $22.50 for the nine-week program.

Voluntary Contributions.

Voluntary school contributions can still be paid before the end of Term 2. The cost is $25 for one child or $50 for two or more children. These funds are used to support the library and other school programs. All names go into a draw to win lunch at Lorenzo’s Restaurant, Keira Street, which will take place in the last week of term.

The  Bounce Back! Resilience Program is designed to develop the key coping skills associated with self reliance, namely, self efficacy and a success orientation, a capacity to think optimistically and helpfully about situations, and being able to regulate one’s emotions.

The focus for weeks nine and ten will be INCLUSION exploring difference and learning to live comfortably with the ways in which others are different from you. Accepting differences requires an open mind and leads to increased peace and harmony.

Parent-Teacher Interviews

If you would like to speak with your child’s teacher but have not yet contacted them regarding a suitable date and time, please do so this week as spaces are filling up fast for Week 10 and 11 interviews.
