Parking In Corinda Road
I would like to remind everyone that Corinda Road is a no stopping zone between 8:00 and 9:30 in the morning and 2:30-4:00 in the afternoon. During these times, cars must not park or wait for extended periods with their motors running as this slows the flow of traffic. When parents cannot drop their small children at the gates because the turning circle is congested with waiting cars, this creates a safety hazard for both students and parents. Parking is readily available in Royal Crescent, a short walk from the school gates. This is a small price to pay to ensure the safety of all our boys and girls, particularly for our youngest students. It would be a tragedy for both the driver and a child’s family if one of our students was hurt. Wollongong Council parking sheriffs regularly target school drop-off and no stopping zones and will impose hefty on-the-spot fines for infringements. I am sure that this problem can be solved if we can be patient and show consideration for others.
Gym Sports K-2
Gymsports for Kindergarten, Years 1 and 2 begins this Friday. Children will receive their notes today.
Crunch and Sip
Crunch and Sip continues to be very successful. Remember to keep sending your child each day with fruit and/or veges in their container.
Why shouldn’t students eat snacks like muesli bars or rollups during Crunch and Sip?
These foods are high in sugar and energy and low in other nutrients such as vitamins and minerals. Fruit and vegetables are lower in energy and high in nutrients, making them the ideal snack option. Muesli bars and rollups also tend to stick to teeth which increases the risk of tooth decay.

Whooping Cough
NSW Health advises that there continues to be a significant number of whooping cough notifications among school age children.
Pertussis usually begins like a cold, with a runny nose, tiredness and sometimes a mild fever. Coughing then develops, usually in bouts, followed by a deep gasp (or “whoop”).
Infectious children are restricted from going to school. Pertussis is prevented by immunisation at 2, 4 and 6 months of age with boosters at 4 and 15 years. Immunisation is available through general practitioners and some local councils. Call Public Health on 42216700 for more information.
Voluntary School Contributions
During Term 2 we will be asking for your support with voluntary school contributions. Families are asked to contribute $25 for one child or $50 per family. Contributing families will go into a draw to win lunch for two at Lorenzo’s Diner, Keira Street, valued at approximately $100. Thank you to Lorenzo for his generous support of our school and to Ann Burbrook for her organisation.
Band
2009 Band practice begins this week. All students who have signed up will receive a note today outlining costs for the term. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn a musical instrument and very reasonable in terms of cost compared to other types of musical tuition.

Young Leaders Conference
On Monday 23rd February, the student executive of 2009 went up to the Sydney Auditorium for the 2009 National Young Leaders Conference. Some speakers included James Roy (an Australian author) “a drop of ink will make a million think”, Birdie Carter (Australian actor) “never sell yourself short of your dreams”, Natalie Cook (the Olympic volleyball gold medallist) “there are three ships: leadership, relationship, and followship”, Mike Martin (who is from the Halogen Foundation) also spoke about “leadership is about responsibility”. We all had a great time there and we would like to thank the school for paying for us to go, Ms Pechey for organising it, and the parents who drove us up, Martyn and Tracey. It was a great day and thank you everyone.
By Rory.
Uniform Shop
Thanks to a marathon effort by uniform shop volunteers over the last few weeks. We have had a record number of financial transactions so far. Second hand clothing sales has also been very popular. Thanks to Melanie, Maria, Nigel, Renee and Ingrid for all their efforts. Also, we have two new volunteers to start shortly.
Thank you.
March 4 is P&C Day
In 2006, the Federation of P&C Association of New South Wales launched the first P&C day, which is seen as a way of recognising the effort of all the P&C associations. P&C associations across NSW contribute in excess of $50 million to schools.
It’s time to reflect on Woonona East P&C is achievements over the last 12 months. In the newsletter for term 4, week 9 in 2008, we explained what the efforts of the P&C had provided to the school during the year. For example, maths resources, support for the Southern Stars and book vouchers at the end-of-year assembly.
What the P&C achieves during a year is very dependent on the combined effort of volunteers. Next week (Tue 10/3) is the annual general meeting of Woonona East’s P&C. All positions will be declared vacant and we are always looking for people to bring new ideas and energy. You don’t need to have any prior experience since other members who have been around can provide plenty of support. You don’t need to take on a committee position to contribute, just come when you can. Please join us at AGM and see what you can help us achieve in 2009!
If you have any questions, you can call me at work on 4298 6511 or my mobile 0415 990 123.
