BOUNCE BACK!

Hello again everyone.

Next term the boys and girls will be involved in a new personal development program called ‘Bounce Back’. This program uses children’s literature to teach students about being positive and resilient and gives them skills to ‘bounce back’ after disappointment or a negative experience.  The program covers many areas of the PDHPE syllabus including anti bullying, self esteem and friendship skills. There is a particular Bounce Back acronym for each Stage. The acronym for Stage 3 students is:

Bad times don’t last. Things always get better. Stay optimistic.

Other people can help if you talk to them. Get a reality check.

Unhelpful thinking makes you feel more upset.

Nobody is perfect – not you and not others.

Concentrate on the positives (no matter how small) and use laughter.

Everybody experiences sadness, hurt, failure, rejection and setbacks from time to time. They are a normal part of life. Try not to personalise them.

Blame fairly – how much of what happened was because of you, how much was because of others and how much was because of bad luck or circumstances?

Accept the things you can’t change, but try to change what you can first.

Catastrophising exaggerates your worries. Don’t believe the worst possible picture.

Keep things in perspective. It’s only one part of your life.

There is a great deal of wisdom here that we could all put into place from time to time. I know the children will enjoy the program next term.

Have a great week!

Principal

Whooping Cough.

There has been a confirmed case of whooping cough in the school. Please be on the lookout for symptoms such as a runny nose, tickly cough and mild fever. Whooping cough is highly contagious in its early stages and particularly dangerous for children under 6 months of age. If you suspect that your child is infected please see your doctor immediately so that a diagnosis and treatment, if required, can be started. Children with a confirmed infection cannot return to school until their entire course of antibiotics is completed (usually 5 days).

Please see the attached information from NSW Health.

Thankyou Parents and Students!

A huge thank you to all the parents and students who gave up their time on Saturday to attend the school’s working bee. We made some fantastic progress in clearing weeds and grass from play  areas, mowing, replanting, and re-mulching the main garden beds around the COLA area. There is always something to be done so if you are able to help at any time with gardening, mulching or mowing and snipping please let me know. Don’t forget that the parents’ environment group meets each Tuesday morning at 9:00 for general weeding and garden maintenance.

MORE GOOD NEWS ABOUT OUR BUILDING PLANS!

Late last week I was very pleased to receive a phone call from Sydney advising me that our school would be one of the first in NSW to receive a school hall under the Federal Government’s ‘Building the Education Revolution’ package.

The hall will be the standard size for schools with our number of students ie 140 square metres and include a stage, sports store and a variety of other storage rooms, toilets and a movable rear door that can open fully to a covered outdoor area. It is proposed that the hall will be sited on the oval behind the current library and Stage 1 classrooms.

It will be fantastic to be able to hold our assemblies out of the weather and to have an extra space for choir, band and dance practice and for such activities as gymnastics and visiting performers.

I am expecting to hear more in the near future and will keep you informed through the newsletter.

            Have a great week!

School Working Bee Saturday 28th March.

Why: to tidy and beautify our school grounds.

When: Saturday 28th March 12:00-3:00 followed by a thankyou sausage sizzle.

Please bring: the school has a mower and whipper snipper but you may be willing to bring yours along so that we can divide into areas and get the job done even quicker! Spades, garden forks, shears, secateurs and similar tools would also be handy for weeding and trimming.

Please register at the office before Saturday so that we know how many helpers we will have. Even if you can only spare an hour, we’d love to see you there. Thankyou in anticipation of your support.

Better Buddies Barbecue Tomorrow

Tomorrow, Tuesday at 12:30 we will be holding a barbecue for our 5/6H students and their Kindergarten buddies. This year the children have come together each week to develop their relationships through participation in fun activities. This has made the transition to school easier for our youngest students, particularly in the playground where they have had ‘big’ children to help and care for them. The seniors have been great role models for Kindergarten and we are all looking forward to our lunch tomorrow. A special thank you to Ms Bui for her donation of bread for our barbecue.

Use the Safety Door

It is essential that children use the door closest to the kerb when getting into or out of cars ie the ‘safety door’. Please ensure that your children do this especially in the mornings and afternoons when roads around our school are so busy.

Have Your Say About The School Building Redevelopment and Concept Plan

At last Tuesday night’s P and C meeting we were presented with the concept plans for the redevelopment of our school by officers from the Department of Education and Training.

The P and C have been hard at work for some time now, lobbying the State government for support to improve the facilities at our school. As a result two concept proposals have been developed by the architect, incorporating a combination of refurbished and new buildings which will, if they come to fruition, revitalise our entire school.

While this is only step one in a long-term process it is still a very exciting one, especially now that there is also a good possibility of accessing some of the billions of dollars that Mr Rudd has slated to improve public school facilities across Australia.

Because we would like all members of our school community to contribute their ideas, I will place laminated copies of the plans on the noticeboard on the COLA stage and on the picnic tables outside Kindergarten throughout this week. Please take the time to have a look and pass your ideas on at the office. The boys and girls will also get to have a say at the next SRC meeting.

The P and C will be passing our suggestions on to the architect in the following week.

Have a great week!

Outcome of the P & C AGM and General Meeting held on 10 March 2009

During the AGM all positions were vacated.  A big thank you to all the hard working officers leaving and a big welcome to all the officers elected for 2009.

The exciting news from the General Meeting was the presentation by the Department of Asset Management of 2 possible options to upgrade and improve our schools buildings and grounds.

These 2 plans will be posted in the school grounds for your comment.  Please pass all feedback in writing to the office by Friday 20 March.  All comments will be collated back to the Asset managers and a final plan developed.

If you would like a copy of the minutes emailed to you, leave your email address in the P & C folder in the office.

Don’t Forget Your Water Bottles!

Adequate fluid intake is essential to good health. Not drinking enough fluid causes dehydration. Any level of dehydration can cause physical symptoms such as poor concentration in class, headaches and irritability. Children rarely drink enough water during break times at school and often forget to drink unless reminded. Crunch and Sip provides an opportunity to drink water and prevent dehydration.

How much water do children need?

The recommended daily amounts of water for children and adolescents are:

5 glasses (1 litre) for 5-8 year olds

7 glasses (1.5 litres) for 9-13 year olds

9-10 glasses (2litres) for 14+ years

*a glass is 250ml

More water is needed if children are exercising or sweating due to heat.

High School 2010 Application Forms

Application Forms are due back at school on or before Friday 27th March.

Supporting Our School and Your Children.

At Woonona East PS, our students benefit from the fantastic support of our parents and others within the community.  Whether within the classroom, at community days and fun days, for fundraising, at parent days, for special services and ceremonies, in the canteen or at P&C, it is always great to have adults around, working together with the staff and students of the school.  There are so many people who spend hours and hours, in various ways, for the students of our school.

Every time you help your child with his/her homework or home reading, every time you complete permission notes and return them on time, every time you support the fundraising or come to one of our special events – you are supporting our school and your children.

Being an active part of the ‘community team’ at WEPS means that you know and see what is happening in the school, you have the opportunity to meet other parents and community members, you have the opportunity to learn new skills for yourself, you get to know and support the staff who are teaching your children and you help promote the general principles of education.

Being a member of our P&C also ensures you have a say in what is happening in the school and you help direct the priorities of the school.

2008 was a great year of team work at WEPS and it is once again time for our P&C Annual General Meeting.  While we have a strong and committed P&C committee at present, there is always room for ‘new blood’.  The P&C consists of both executive and non-executive members.

So come and join us at our 1st P&C meeting for 2009 this Tuesday night at 7:00pm in the staffroom.

Sharyn Liddle

Principal

A Message From Your P&C.

The P & C AGM will be held on Tuesday 10 March 2009 at 7:00 in the staff room.

All P & C positions will be vacated and elections held.  Your nominations are welcome.

If you have wondered what is involved in holding a position on the P&C there are  duty statements are on the WEPS website under Parents and Citizens http://weps.edublogs.org/woonona-east-parents-and-citizens/  or just talk with a current member.  No experience required and lots of support on offer!

However, you don’t have to hold a position to contribute towards the P & C achievements, just come when you can.

As well as the AGM, the Department of Education and Training will attend the meeting to present the Concept Master Plan that addresses the building issues at WEPS (replacing temporary class rooms with permanent ones, leaking roofs etc).  This is indeed exciting progress.

See you there.

Annie Waugh, Secretary WEPS P&C

Thanks to all the parents who have encouraged their students to be part of our school band this year. We would appreciate fees being paid by Tuesday this week please.

Outstanding Student Information Sheets

Replacement sheets have been sent home with the children who have not returned their yellow form. Please ensure that these are returned this week so that our records are up to date.

High School 2010 Application Forms

All students in Year 6 will receive their application packages today. These are due back at school on or before Friday 27th March.

Applications For Woonona High School Selective Class, Year 7 2010.

Application Forms for the selective class will be sent home in the above package. These forms must be returned to Woonona High School before Wednesday 6th May. The literacy, numeracy and problem solving test will be held at Woonona High on Monday 11th May. Parents will be informed of results by Monday 25th May.

Creepy Crawlies.

Please be on the look out for these annoying and distressing pests that invade our kids’ (and sometimes teachers’) hair from time to time. If a child or children are identified as having head lice, a note will be sent home to all families in that class, warning parents to be on the lookout. Once treated, all eggs must be removed from the hair strands with a metal fine-toothed nit comb available from chemists. This procedure must be repeated over several days to ensure all the eggs are removed. A good preventative is to tie long hair up in buns or plaits and, for both boys and girls, smooth on some hair gel or spray with hair spray. This prevents the eggs from being attached to the hair shaft. Spraying inside hats daily with a teatree oil and water solution can also be effective. An information sheet is attached. Please note that students should not attend school until their hair has been treated as described and all eggs removed. For more information: www.health.nsw.gov.au/headlice/treatment/index.html

NAPLAN: National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy.

If you have any questions regarding the tests please call Mrs Liddle on 42841472.

Newsletter Term 1 – week 6

Posted on March 2nd, 2009 in Newsletter by weps

Parking In Corinda Road

I would like to remind everyone that Corinda Road is a no stopping zone between 8:00 and 9:30 in the morning and 2:30-4:00 in the afternoon. During these times, cars must not park or wait for extended periods with their motors running as this slows the flow of traffic. When parents cannot drop their small children at the gates because the turning circle is congested with waiting cars, this creates a safety hazard for both students and parents. Parking is readily available in Royal Crescent, a short walk from the school gates. This is a small price to pay to ensure the safety of all our boys and girls, particularly for our youngest students. It would be a tragedy for both the driver and a child’s family if one of our students was hurt. Wollongong Council parking sheriffs regularly target school drop-off and no stopping zones and will impose hefty on-the-spot fines for infringements. I am sure that this problem can be solved if we can be patient and show consideration for others.

Gym Sports K-2

Gymsports for Kindergarten, Years 1 and 2 begins this Friday. Children will receive their notes today.

Crunch and Sip

Crunch and Sip continues to be very successful. Remember to keep sending your child each day with fruit and/or veges in their container.

Why shouldn’t students eat snacks like muesli bars or rollups during Crunch and Sip?

These foods are high in sugar and energy and low in other nutrients such as vitamins and minerals. Fruit and vegetables are lower in energy and high in nutrients, making them the ideal snack option. Muesli bars and rollups also tend to stick to teeth which increases the risk of tooth decay.

P and C AGM Tuesday 10th March 7:00pm

Officers from the Department of Education will be discussing plans for the improvement of our school site and buildings. The AGM and election of Office Bearers for 2009 will follow. Everyone is welcome to attend.

MUFTI Day Success

Thankyou everyone for your generous donations to which raised $500 for the bushfire appeal.

Thanks Parents!

Thankyou to the parents who came along to help with cleanup day. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Mowing

We are desperately in need of help with mowing and whipper-snippering around the school. If you are able to help in any way we would love to hear from you. Please call Mrs Liddle on 42841472.

To find out if you are eligible and what you can claim,

visit www.educationtaxrefund.gov.au  or phone the Tax Office on 13 28 61.

Whooping Cough

NSW Health advises that there continues to be a significant number of whooping cough notifications among school age children.

Pertussis usually begins like a cold, with a runny nose, tiredness and sometimes a mild fever. Coughing then develops, usually in bouts, followed by a deep gasp (or “whoop”).

Infectious children are restricted from going to school. Pertussis is prevented by immunisation at 2, 4 and 6 months of age with boosters at 4 and 15 years. Immunisation is available through general practitioners and some local councils. Call Public Health on  42216700 for more information.

Voluntary School Contributions

During Term 2 we will be asking for your support with voluntary school contributions. Families are asked to contribute $25 for one child or $50 per family. Contributing families will go into a draw to win lunch for two at Lorenzo’s Diner, Keira Street, valued at approximately $100. Thank you to Lorenzo for his generous support of our school and to Ann Burbrook for her organisation.

Band

2009 Band practice begins this week. All students who have signed up will receive a note today outlining costs for the term. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn a musical instrument and very reasonable in terms of cost compared to other types of musical tuition.

Outstanding Student Information Sheets

Please ensure that you have returned your child’s Personal Information Sheet and that all contact details are current.

Young Leaders Conference

On Monday 23rd February, the student executive of 2009 went up to the Sydney Auditorium for the 2009 National Young Leaders Conference.  Some speakers included James Roy (an Australian author) “a drop of ink will make a million think”,  Birdie Carter (Australian actor) “never sell yourself short of your dreams”,  Natalie Cook (the Olympic volleyball gold medallist) “there are three ships: leadership, relationship, and followship”,  Mike Martin (who is from the Halogen Foundation) also spoke about “leadership is about responsibility”.  We all had a great time there and we would like to thank the school for paying for us to go, Ms Pechey for organising it, and the parents who drove us up, Martyn and Tracey.  It was a great day and thank you everyone.

By Rory.

Uniform Shop

Thanks to a marathon effort by uniform shop volunteers over the last few weeks.  We have had a record number of financial transactions so far.   Second hand clothing sales has also been very popular.  Thanks to Melanie, Maria, Nigel, Renee and Ingrid for all their efforts.  Also, we have two new volunteers to start shortly.

Thank you.

March 4 is P&C Day

In 2006, the Federation of P&C Association of New South Wales launched the first P&C day, which is seen as a way of recognising the effort of all the P&C associations.  P&C associations across NSW contribute in excess of $50 million to schools.

It’s time to reflect on Woonona East P&C is achievements over the last 12 months.  In the newsletter for term 4, week 9 in 2008, we explained what the efforts of the P&C had provided to the school  during the year.  For example, maths resources, support for the Southern Stars and book vouchers at the end-of-year assembly.

What the P&C achieves during a year is very dependent on the combined effort of volunteers.  Next week (Tue 10/3) is the annual general meeting of Woonona East’s P&C.  All positions will be declared vacant and we are always looking for people to bring new ideas and energy.  You don’t need to have any prior experience since other members who have been around can provide plenty of support.  You don’t need to take on a committee position to contribute, just come when you can.  Please join us at AGM and see what you can help us achieve in 2009!

If you have any questions, you can call me at work on 4298 6511 or my mobile 0415 990 123.

Ingrid Rylander

There was a price error in our 2kg royal gala apples from Glenbernie orchard.  Our apples are $7.00 per 2kg bag.  Please have orders in by Friday 6th March.  Apples will be delivered to classrooms next Tuesday.
