The Importance of Good Attendance

By law, all children between the ages of six and fifteen must attend school regularly and it is the responsibility of parents to ensure that this happens. Similarly, children need to be at school, ready to start the school day by 8:55am. Class rolls are marked promptly at 9:00am and if children arrive after this time they will be recorded on our computer system as a partial absence. Arriving late to school is very unsettling for both the child and their class.

Good attendance makes learning easier for children and helps them build and maintain friendships. If students miss the basic skills in the early years of school, they may have problems later on so regular attendance at school helps children to succeed in later life.

Children must attend school, on time, every day, unless they:

  • are too sick to go to school
  • have been injured
  • have to attend a special religious ceremony
  • have an infectious illness eg. chicken pox, mumps or measles

If you are arranging a family holiday during school time you should inform the school in advance and request permission for your child to be absent. You can ask the school to provide homework that can be done while your child is away. Longer absences overseas will require you to complete a Request For Exemption From School application.

It is important to let the school know why your child was absent by providing a note explaining their absence on the day that they return to school. You can also phone the school with this information.

If you have any questions about the school attendance policy or are concerned about your child’s attendance please see me at school or give me a call on 42841472.

Have a great week!

Principal

Voluntary School Contributions

Following discussion at last week’s P and C meeting we will again be asking for your support with voluntary school contributions. Families are asked to contribute $25 for one child or $50 per family. In the past, this money has supported the purchase of library materials. We understand that Term 1 is particularly costly with uniform and textbook purchases so we will be targeting Term 2 for voluntary contributions this year. Contributing families will go into a draw to win lunch for two at Lorenzo’s Diner, Keira Street, valued at approximately $100. Thank you to Lorenzo for his generous support of our school and to Ann Burbrook for her organisation.

MUFTI Day Wednesday 25th February.

Woonona East will be holding a mufti-day fundraiser to help the people who have lost their homes and belongings in the bushfires in Melbourne, Victoria.

The SRC will collect the gold coin donation and all the money raised will be donated to the Salvation Army bushfire appeal. Our mufti-day will be held on Wednesday 25th February. Children can dress as farmers or wear regular mufti clothing. Remember – every little bit counts! Jay

Band Meeting This Tuesday Afternoon 2-3pm

Last week Mr Eric Dunan from the Wollongong Conservatorium came to speak to the children about joining the school band. This generated a lot of interest and excitement which we hope will result in as many students as possible having the chance to participate this year. Our first band meeting will be at 2pm tomorrow, Tuesday, February 24th. Students who have their instruments should bring them on this day.  Students who have not obtained their instruments should come to the meeting as well.
Parents who have questions are also invited to attend.

Outstanding Student Information Sheets

Please ensure that you have returned your child’s Personal Information Sheet and that all contact details are current as we are now entering details into the school’s computer system.

School Cleanup Day

This Friday 27th all students will participate in School Cleanup day in support of the Clean Up Australia campaign. Each grade will be allocated an area of the school grounds to tidy and closely supervised by their teachers. Children should bring along a pair of gloves. Classes are rostered on for 20-30 minutes each. Please see your child’s teacher if you would like to participate. We are desperate for assistance with weeding of garden beds and your help with this would be greatly appreciated!

BUSHFIRE RELIEF

There will be very few of us who have not watched in horror the unfolding tragedy of the Victorian bushfires over the past week. I am sure, too, that many of you were also uplifted, as I was, by the courage of the survivors and by their determination to rebuild their communities.

I was very impressed last week by the number of children who asked if our school could support the bushfire relief effort. It is gratifying to witness such generosity and compassion in our students. Below is a message from the SRC.

Woonona East will be holding a mufti-day fundraiser to help the people who have lost their homes and belongings in the bushfires in Melbourne, Victoria.

Rhiannon and Tegan will collect the gold coin donation and all the money raised will be donated to the Salvation Army bushfire appeal. Our mufti-day will be held on Wednesday 25th February. Children can dress as farmers or wear regular mufti clothing.

We hope that everyone will participate in this fund-raising event. Rhiannon and Tegan on behalf of the SRC.

Have a great week!

Birthday Treats

As we have so many students with food intolerances and allergies to particular ingredients, the children are asked not to bring birthday cakes or treats to share with classmates.  Your understanding and support in this matter is appreciated.

School Volunteers: Working With Children Check

Thank you to all the parents who have volunteered to help out in our school. Under legislation, all school volunteers who have any contact with children must complete a Working With Children Check each year. Forms are available from the school office. Completed forms should be given to Mrs Liddle.

Lost Property

The lost property box (large, white plastic) will be placed near the Corinda Road gate each morning. If your child has lost a jumper, towel, lunchbox etc this will be the place to find it. Class bag rooms should also be checked. The box will be cleaned out fortnightly and good quality unclaimed items recycled. Please remember to label all your child’s belongings so they can easily be returned to them if lost.

Back to School- A Message From ‘Asthma NSW’.

Early February, just after school goes back, is the

time of year when children are most likely to have a flare-up of their asthma, so it is important that

parents keep an eye on their children’s asthma,

ensure they take their prescribed preventer

medication regularly, and that they always carry

their reliever medication with them.

Symptoms in young children may include wheezing,

persistent coughing or shortness of breath. If these symptoms do not respond to the child’s reliever medication, or if reliever medication is needed every day, we are encouraging parents to take their children immediately to a doctor.

Although asthma is mild in most children, it can be

serious and even life-threatening if it is not properly managed, so it is important that anyone with asthma sees their doctor regularly and develops an asthma action plan so they know what to do when their symptoms worsen.

Ensure that you see your GP for an update on your child’s asthma and be sure to supply the school with an updated Asthma Action Plan.

If parents have any questions, they should call the

Asthma Information Line on 1800 645 130 or speak

with their doctor.

Crunch and Sip

What a fantastic effort!  Our first Crunch and Sip week has been very successful with most children in every class participating.  Remember it is fruit and vegetables only – no biscuits or dips.  This is a short 5 minute break, so keep food down to a minimum and resist the temptation to fill your child’s container.  Any food your child does not finish can be eaten at recess.

Newsletter Week 3 Term 1 2009

Posted on February 10th, 2009 in Newsletter by weps

Keeping Up Our High Standard

Since arriving at Woonona East I have been generally pleased with the standard of uniform being worn by our students.  It is great to see them showing pride in their school in this way and contributes to the positive image our school enjoys within the local community.  School uniforms are also comfortable, practical, easy to maintain and relatively cheap compared to other items of clothing and we have an excellent uniform shop run by dedicated parents.

I am concerned however, with the footwear being worn by some of the children, particularly from a safety aspect.  Slip-on canvas shoes do not provide the level of support required for students’ feet when doing all the active things they participate in at school each day.  The preferred footwear for school is black lace-up school shoes or black joggers.  Very brightly coloured shoes should be kept for home wear.

I have attached a copy of the school Uniform Policy for your information and look forward to your support in maintaining the sense of pride, identity and equity that wearing school uniform encourages in our school.

Have a great week!

Sharyn Liddle

Principal

WEPS Makes a Splash!

Last week we held our swimming carnival.  What a great day!  It was fantastic to see so many children participating in the races, and also cheering their houses along.  A big thank you to all the parents who volunteered their time to assist with the running of the carnival.  Your help was greatly appreciated.  Thank you also to Pat Hall for the organisation of timekeepers.  House points and results are as follows:

                        1st Endeavour – 1645 points

            2nd Banks – 1015 points

            3rd Macquarie – 990 points

            4th Cook – 935 points

Well done to all the competitors, many of whom will be moving on to the District Carnival on Monday 23rd February. Ribbons will be awarded and Age Champions announced at the Whole School Assembly beginning at 9:10 this Thursday. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Miss Clarkson and Mrs Lindley

SRC Badges

SRC reps will receive their badges at Thursday morning’s assembly starting at 9:10. Parents of these students are invited to attend.

Crunching and Sipping®

Don’t forget that Crunch and Sip® is now on every morning. Three children from each class will receive a special certificate this week for their decorated boxes.

Children are encouraged to bring fruit/vegies to munch and water to drink at this time each day. Please provide your child with a clean, clear plastic water bottle with their name clearly marked. This can be any clear bottle such as an empty water, sports drink or juice bottle. Make sure you wash the bottle each night!

Students will also need a small piece of fruit or vegetable to eat at their desk. The fruit can be any variety of whole or chopped fruit (apple, melon, fruit in tubs in natural juice or sultanas*) or vegies such as celery, carrot sticks or cherry tomatoes.

No other foods are permitted for Crunch and Sip®.

* Note: dried fruit contains high concentrations of natural sugar and this tends to stick to teeth increasing the risk of tooth decay. Although dried fruit is permitted, fresh fruit or vegetables are the best choice.

Textbooks.

All students will receive their textbooks and begin using them in class over the next week. Families will be invoiced for the costs of texts once they have all arrived. The average costs will be about $40:00 per student.

Parent Teacher Meetings 4P.

Meetings for 4P, Mrs Pechey’s class, will be at 8:15 on Monday 16th February.

P and C News

Back to School Safety Challenge 2: Slow Down to 40 in School Zones

School zones are very busy immediately before and after school. Travelling above the speed limit is extremely dangerous and can increase the risk to our children. To highlight this point, a colouring competition sheet can be found in this weeks’ Advertiser. Children should return completed forms to Mrs Liddle by Friday 6th of March to have a chance of winning some great prizes including a $300 bike voucher and passes to Taronga Zoo and Jamberoo Recreation Park.

Closure of Park Road 14th February – 2nd March.

While work is being carried out on the rail crossing, parents driving their children to school should drop them at the Royal Crescent or Corinda Road gates. The Railway Parade railway gate will remain open to pedestrians but Railway Parade between Park Road and Dorrigo Avenue will be closed to non-local traffic. People walking to school will continue to be able to cross the railway line at Park Road and will be provided with a safe route around the worksite. If you have any questions please ring Mike Dowd at Wollongong City Council on 4227 7722.
