Newsletter Week 10 Term 3 2008

Posted on September 22nd, 2008 in Newsletter by weps

• Congratulations to Erin, Zachary  and James who will be receiving their Principal’s Award at this week’s K-6 assembly. A reminder that this week’s assembly is on Friday at 9:10pm, not the usual Thursday timeslot. This is to accommodate our 2009 Kindergarten Orientation program that runs on Thursday mornings.
• Interviews are being held today to choose the Woonona East principal. Although I’m disappointed I didn’t proceed to interview, I’m sure a suitable candidate will be chosen and hopefully the school community will be informed early next term.
• Parents are asked to be mindful of leaving young children in cars when they pick up their children from the school. As the weather heats up children can get distressed very quickly in a locked up car. If the car is unlocked, the child may wander off or be approached by strangers.

It is strongly recommended that all Year 2 students take advantage of this opportunity if possible. The Intensive Swimming Program is offered to all children in Year 2. If places are available they may then be offered to children in Years 3 and 4. Notes and further information will be sent home shortly. Mrs Lindley.

Thank you to everyone who got into the spirit and participated in our Numeracy week activities. We had a lot of fun and hopefully, some people could see that maths can be fun.
Congratulations to 1B who were the closest to guessing how long the ice would take to melt. It actually took 21 hours and 50 minutes. 1B guessed 24 hours.
In the Guess My Weight competition the jar weighed 1225g or 1.225kg. Well done, Drew who got the closest with his guess of 1001g or 1.001kg.
In the Guess My Number competition there were 315 lollies. Lucky Kane guessed 316 the closest to the answer.

SRC News
The Bilby is a nocturnal marsupial with large ears and belongs to the Bandicoot family. Bilbies eat seeds, insects, spiders, bulbs, fruit and fungi. Bilbies now only exist in Northern Western Australia, Northern Territory and far Southwest Queensland. This is due to predators like foxes and cats and competition with rabbits. The Save the Bilby Fund is now one of the largest community conservation projects in Australia. National Bilby Day is being held on Sunday 14 September. To help save the Bilby, the SRC will be selling items on Friday 12 September. Temporary tattoos $1.00 each, Bilby clutch pins $2.00 each, Dangle Legs Magnetic Bilby $5.00 each. So come on and bring your money to help save this wonderful native animal. For more information go to

Sugar and Tooth Decay – Sticky foods that cling to children’s teeth and foods that are high in sugar contribute with tooth decay. Highly refined sugar foods are often high in fat as well, and eating more of these types of foods will leave less room in the stomach for healthier foods such as breads, pasta, rice, potatoes, milk and cereals. Carbohydrates such as, pasta, rice, potatoes and vegetables and natural sugars from fruit and vegetables are healthy sugars of energy. “NO Added Sugar” on the food label meams that no extra sugar has been added during the manufacturing process. It does not mean that the food is low in sugar, the food may still be high in natural sugars (such as 100% juice). Kids Café Summer menu will go out in week 10 newsletter.

Newsletter Week 7 Term 3 2008

Posted on September 1st, 2008 in Newsletter by weps

• Well done Southern Stars performers! I have heard nothing but praise for your efforts and performances. Mrs Lindley, Ms Armstrong and quite a few of the students looked a bit tired today after such a big weekend. Hopefully we will be able to have a bit of a look at the performance at our school assembly next week.
• Congratulations to Teya, Karisha and Sanna who will be receiving their Principal’s Award at next week’s K-6 assembly.
• Our vegetable gardens are well underway behind the school canteen and our chook pen is coming together as well. One little boy, when asked, confidently said “Eggs come from the supermarket.” He wasn’t aware of the chook’s role in the process. Hopefully our efforts will lead to a greater understanding and appreciation of how our food is produced.
• This week is Numeracy Week and Ms Pechey has a few very interesting activities organised at the school to intrigue and puzzle the students and teachers.

Southern Stars
On the 27th August, 30 children from our school went to a rehearsal for Southern Stars. It was an early wake-up, but it was worth every second. On Thursday 28th we did another rehearsal at WIN Entertainment Centre, but this time it was a dress rehearsal. Now we were ready for our big day. There was about 3000 children performing from the Illawarra and Shoalhaven regions. It was a long wait till every item was performed. There was dancing, singing and an acrobatic performance. There were farm animals and a huge spider web. We did a matinee on Friday and another performance on Friday night and the same happened on Saturday. I was very excited about doing Southern Stars this year, although it meant early mornings. Thank you to Miss Armstrong and Mrs Lindley for all their hard work and thank you to the parents for taking us to and from the performances.

IRON Children need IRON for energy and to help them concentrate in class!
The best sources of Iron are red meat, such as beef and lamb. White meat such as fish, turkey and chicken are also good sources of iron. It is important that meat is included in your child’s diet several times a week. Non meat sources include baked beans, wholegrain bread, breakfast cereals and green leafy vegetables. Eating these non meat sources with vitamin c rich foods obtained by fruit and vegetables will increase the amount of iron absorbed by your body. Iron is needed to manufacture blood, which is constantly being ‘replenished’. As your children grow the volume of their blood also increases so it’s important to maintain a good supply of iron.
