• Welcome back to Term 3. I hope children had a relaxing break and are ready for a big term. A calendar accompanies this newsletter detailing the activities we know are happening and, as usual, the weekly newsletter and online calendar will provide further information and updates. In the next fortnight we have Southern Stars rehearsals, National Tree Day, District Athletics, 2F’s assembly and the start of Friday PSSA competitions.
• Teachers had a productive School Development Day yesterday. One area we looked at was the school’s anti-bullying plan and ways that we can improve this. The plan will be presented to the community later this term. Later this term we will welcome back the award winning Steve’s Unique Puppets to present the follow up Bully For You program.
• Our merit award system will receive a shake-up this term. We are asking students to design a new logo for our awards – a WEPSI. Designs, in black and white, may be handed in until this Friday and a winner will be presented in next week’s newsletter.

Classroom Materials
Could you please ensure that your child has the “tools” needed to complete classroom work. At this time of the year pencil cases often need a refresh to ensure everything is in working condition. Glue sticks, especially, often need replacing.

Long Term Leave
Due to changed Department of Education and Training (DET) requirements, any student taking leave for 15 or more days needs to obtain a leave form from the office to fill in and return. The school will then send the form on to the appropriate DET office.

MS Readathon Readers
It is time for MS Readathon readers to stop counting their books and start collecting their sponsorship to help raise funds for people with multiple sclerosis (MS). 28 students began the reading race on June 1 and now need to return their completion form and sponsorship. Every dollar counts as we try to help fund services and research for people who live with MS everyday. Students who have yet to receive their completion form can download one from our website www.msreadathon.org.au/parents/downloadforms. All receipt books (used or unused) must be returned with sponsorship. If you have been reading for the MS Readathon but forgot to register it isn’t too late to get involved by registering online today with the help of mum or dad. It is now time to for Woonona East students to cross the finish line of this reading relay and be rewarded for your reading! On your mark, get set, go! You can call the office on 1300 677 323 for more information. Children who have registered for the MS Readathon at Woonona East Public School are as follows. A black fluffy toy cat is needed for week 3 to use in the library for storytelling duties. After its time in the limelight it will be returned. Please see Ms Thompson if you can help.

Thank you to Mrs Ward, Mrs M<cLennan and Mrs Dubowec for their help in cleaning and sorting out reading supplies. The books are now ready to return to classrooms.

Choral Festival News
The Performance night at Anita’s Theatre, Thirroul is 6th August. Tickets are now available at the office. Each child has been allocated 2 tickets. These need to be purchased from the office before Tuesday 29th July. Anyone wishing to purchase extra tickets can do sofrom Wednesday 30th July to Friday 1st August. Tickets are $10 adult, $5 child. No tickets are available after that date. The uniform shop is organising the hire of uniforms for girls next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday morning from 8.30am in the old staff room. Cost is $30 ($20 refunded on return of uniform). If you are unable to come with your child, please send a note giving permission for the ladies to help with fitting.

Environment News
1. National Tree Day – Our school will be participating in National Tree Day on Friday. The children will be planting approximately 60 plants along the boundary fence to provide a windbreak and to create habitat for native birds. By doing this they are helping combat climate change and will be learning the value of caring for our environment.
2. NAIDOC Mufti Day last term – Thanks to all those who participated in the Mufti Day last term. The school collected $74.45 and will be purchasing a rotating composting drum soon.
3. Bush Regeneration/Weeding Tuesday – Don’t forget our bush regeneration group on Tuesday!, we will be starting again next week. Come along to maintain the school gardens, have a chat and contribute to our school environment. Meet at the sandpit at 9am on Tuesday mornings and stay for half an hour.

Kindergarten 2009
If you know of any parents who are looking to enrol their children at Woonona East for 2009, could you please ask them to contact our office. We would like to be able to plan ahead for next year and the more information we have the better job we can do.

Peanut and Nut Allergy (Anaphylaxis)
At Woonona East some children are anaphylactic. Anaphylaxis is a severe and sudden allergic reaction which can be life threatening. It occurs when a person is exposed to an allergen. Common allergens for anaphylaxis are:
*foods (e.g. peanuts and nuts, shellfish and fish, milk and egg)
*insect bites (e.g bee, wasp, jumper ants)
*medications (e.g antibiotics, asprin)
*latex (e.g. rubber gloves, balloons, swimming caps)
What do I put in my child’s lunch box that is peanut free?
Many common snack foods contain obvious nuts such as muesli bars and nut butters, while others may contain trace amounts. The main hazard is peanut butter and the risk of contamination on knives, surfaces, door handles and skin. Avoid sending peanut butter including Nutella. Many children who are peanut sensitive will also be sensitive to other nuts and it is essential that all foods be checked for any nuts. Alternative snacks include vegemite or cheese sandwiches, dried fruit, pickles, frozen yoghurt tubs (not muesli based), cheese sticks, chopped or tinned fruit, and fruit strips. Check all biscuit labels carefully, and if there is any doubt leave it out and replace with a fresh food such as fruit or bread based snack. Recheck labels frequently and watch for foods in multi packs as the individual pack may not be labeled. With a little thought it is possible to replace nut-containing foods and provide a varied and healthier lunch box that is nut free.

Voluntary School Fees
Parents are invited to contribute the voluntary school fees for 2008.
One child $25.00; two or more children $50.00.
All funds donated will be allocated directly to the school library for the purchase of children’s books. It would be appreciated if these fees could be paid by the end of this term to help our library budget.

Uniform Shop
The uniform shop will now also be open on Friday mornings from 8.30am to 9.00am. The uniform shop will be cleaning out all lost property.

Kids Café
This weeks warm special fresh pumpkin soup and a bread roll $1.00. Can you help out on Monday mornings to help make jelly’s and mousse? Please call Toni on 4284 5037. Kids Café volunteer’s luncheon will be held 8th August, if you need any information please call Carolyn on 0400 373 650. Don’t forget to RSVP before the 4th August. Canteen opens Wednesday 23rd July.
