Many thanks to Kate for donating a rotating compost bin. Hopefully with the money raised from the mufti day, we will have two bins to rotate food scraps and weeds. They will be situated near the canteen for the canteen volunteers to easily access them.
Bush regeneration/weeding group meets Tuesday mornings 9am -9.30am. We’d love to see you.

Thanks to all the families who participated in the NIT BUSTERS weekend. Lets hope we’ve busted them for the school holidays!

Voluntary School Fees

Parents are invited to contribute the voluntary school fees for 2008.
One child $25.00; two or more children $50.00.
All funds donated will be allocated directly to the school library for the purchase of children’s books. It would be appreciated if these fees could be paid by the end of this term to help our library budget.
Correct Payee names on Cheques
Parents please be aware that any payments to the P&C (such as for the Krispy Kreme drive), it is important to have the correct payee on the cheques.  The banks, at least the Commonwealth, have lately been strict about correct information on cheques.  Unless the correct payee is shown on the cheques, they will not deposit them into the account.
Could you please therefore assist us by making out any cheques to the P&C as “Woonona East P&C Assoc” or “WEPS P&C”.  For items bought in the uniform shop, the cheques should be made out to “Woonona East uniform Shop”, or WEPS uniform shop”.  Thank you.
P&C Treasurer

Mufti Day
Don’t forget that the mufti day will be on Thursday 3rd July. The colours will be red, yellow and black – the colours in the Aboriginal flag. We chose these colours to celebrate NAIDOC Week. NAIDOC celebrations are held around Australia in July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Do you know the meaning of the three colours in the flag?
Black – represents the Aboriginal people in Australia
Red – represents the red earth, the red ochre used in ceremonies and Aboriginal people’s spiritual relation to the land.
Yellow disk – represents the sun, the giver of life and protector.

Uniform Shop
The uniform shop will now also be open on Friday mornings from 8.30am to 9.00am. The uniform shop will be cleaning out all lost property.

Kids Café
This week’s lunch special, toasted chicken wrap with cheese, tomato and lettuce with an apple for $2.50. P&C NITBUSTERS Weekend 28-29 June

Sick of getting that note from your class teacher?

The WEPS P&C have discussed nits, and the Schools’ approach to managing them, at the last few P&C meetings.  Advice from NSW Health suggests that the best way to eradicate (or at least reduce) the instance of nits is for whole school community participate in a NITBUSTERS program.  NITBUSTERS is a joint project between NSW Health, NSW Department of Education & Training, Federation of School Councils and the Federation of P & C Associations. The project aims to educate schools, children and parents about head lice and how to remove them.  More information on the NITBUSTERS program is available at
http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/headlice/nitbusters/parent_info.html

The P&C would like everyone in the school community to participate in nit treatment over the weekend of 28-29 June. Inserted in this week’s newsletter is the recommended treatment from NSW Health.

Nit treatment is a cheap, quick and effective.  The treatment process involves putting conditioner into the person’s hair and then thoroughly combing with a fine tooth comb.  It takes about 5 minutes.  See http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/headlice/treatment/index.html for details of this simple treatment method.  Participation in this program is voluntary but it will only be successful if everyone participates.

With good participation in the NITBUSTERS weekend, hopefully we will reduce the instance of nits at school and the numbers of that note going home.  The P&C looks forward to your participation in the program and we would welcome any feedback on this program (the P&C comments book is in the school office).  If results are good, we may run NITBUSTER weekends during the course of the school year.

Happy combing.

Newsletter Week 8 Term 2 2008

Posted on June 18th, 2008 in Newsletter by weps

•    In the last few weeks we’ve had very positive reports about the behaviour of our students when they are representing our school. Last week we received a certificate from the staff at Minnamurra Rainforest who praised our Stage 2 students for their behaviour, manners and keenness to learn on their recent excursion. Well done Years 3 and 4! Considering they visited the rainforest in the rain it was very important that everybody was sensible.
•    The school is very fortunate to have such a supportive and productive P&C. At last week’s meeting the school received $685 for maths resources and $1050 to support the Southern Stars program.
•    Semester 1 reports will be sent home next week. K and K/1 will be conducting interviews next week. Other classes will be conducting interviews in Week 10. A note will be sent home for these classes this week.

Home Reading
This will be the last week for Term 2 Home Reading. Books will be collected, sorted and re-boxed over the last 2 weeks of term and returned to the classrooms ready for borrowing to begin again next term. Parents are asked to help collect any extra books they may have at home and return them to the classrooms. If there are 2 or 3 parents who have a spare couple of hours on Wednesday 2nd July, we would appreciate your help.

Punctuality
Letters will be sent home today to any child who has been late to school on more than seven occasions. This is part of our ongoing monitoring of all absences, as required by The Department of Education and Training. Sometimes we are unaware of just how easily they add up. When children are late to class they often miss important information and also miss that vital settling-in time before class begins. It is hoped that parents may be able to adjust routines so punctuality can improve.

Reminders
The children in 3L, 3/4A, 4W and year 4 in 4/5H will be participating in a Choir Cluster Rehearsal next Monday 23rd June at Fairy Meadow Demonstration School. The cost is $3.50 and needs to be brought in by Thursday at the latest. Normal school uniform is to be worn and children are asked to bring recess and lunch. All choir members are expected to attend this rehearsal. Reminder that the performance night is Wednesday 6th August at Anita’s Theatre, Thirroul. The choir will be finalised after this day and ticket information will be in the next newsletter. The P & C have generously agreed to hire out the girls uniform. The cost will be $30, with $20 refund when uniform is returned. There will be days of selecting uniforms early next term.

Environment News
Peter Nolan will be in the school over the next few weeks constructing two new native habitat areas. He will be involving students in this work.

Kindergarten 2009
If you know of any parents who are looking to enrol their children at Woonona East for 2009, could you please ask them to contact our office. We would like to be able to plan ahead for next year and the more information we have the better job we can do.

Bush Regeneration
The Bush Regeneration group meets on Tuesdays at 9am at the sandpit for half an hour. This week we will be working on the garden near the 6 class demountable. Don’t forget to sign in at the office.

School Award System Review
Thank you to the fifteen families who returned surveys.  Positive features mentioned about our current award system included consistency and the fact it carries over from year to year. Concerns were raised about students not knowing what awards are for, that different classes have their own award systems that take the emphasis off the school awards, not all teachers handing out the same awards and the thought it is too complicated. People were also concerned about the use of food, especially lollies, as a reward. Two responses questioned the need for an award system at all.
Responses will be discussed with teachers with a view to improving the system.

Athletics
Our school track events will be held this Friday, weather permitting.  Students who are 8 years old or older will be able to compete in the 100 metre, 200 metre and 800 metre races. 5, 6 and 7 year old will have track races and a separate novelty carnival.
A note will be sent home tomorrow detailing events and times.

Teambeat

What a great performance! Every student got to play the drums and had a very enjoyable time. Some people haven’t yet sent in $4 for the performance. A reminder will be sent home and it would be appreciated if the money could be sent in as soon as possible.
Fundraising News
The fundraising committee is organising a Family fun Night for 6th November. There will be great rides for the kids, side show games, a cake and coffee stall, barbeque and hopefully Turkish food and curries. Please put this date in your diary, further details will be provided in the months to come.
Krispy Kreme’s
A big thank you to those who purchased the Krispy Kreme donuts, and thank you to Michelle for organising the drive. Nearly $300 was raised which will greatly benefit all our students.

Signing In
A reminder that all people who are visiting the school must sign in at the office. This includes people working in the canteen, hearing reading groups and doing other jobs. This is a safety and security precaution we need to take.

One child $25.00; two or more children $50.00.
All funds donated will be allocated directly to the school library for the purchase of children’s books. It would be appreciated if these fees could be paid by the end of this term.

During wet lunchtimes movies are often shown to classes. If you have any issues about the movie being shown, please contact your child’s teacher.

A special congratulation goes to Lachlan, our junior Public speaking winner and Elise who took out the senior award. Their names will be engraved on our beautiful new plaques and displayed in the office. Thanks goes to all the hard working teachers and dedicated parents who helped prepare the children.Mrs D’Arcangelo

Murder Under the Microscope

Congratulations to 6P for their Under the Microscope investigation. In this project, students throughout Australia and New Zealand are presented with a mystery, an eco-crime somewhere in Australia. Working as an investigation team, students study the issues and crime sites, research the victims and villains and use the clues provided by Catchment Headquarters (Catchment HQ) to try to solve the mystery. Clues are revealed over a five week period. Once the final clue has been given, teams have a 24 hour window to make their accusation. 6P were one of the winning teams correctly naming the victim as the brown stone curlew, the crime site as the Macquarie River and the villain as Unsustainable Land Management. Well done 6P Detectives.

Reports
Reports will be going home in Week 9 this term with Week 10 being set aside for teacher interviews. K and K/1 will be holding parent interviews in Week 8.

Signing In
A reminder that all people who are visiting the school must sign in at the office. This includes people working in the canteen, hearing reading groups and doing other jobs. This is a safety and security precaution we need to take.
