Newsletter Week 5 Term 2 2008

Posted on May 26th, 2008 in Newsletter by weps

Welcome to Education Week. A glance at the agenda shows that this week, as usual, is a busy one at Woonona East. On Tuesday Mrs Bell, Mrs Harris-Cross and myself will be attending the Big School Expo at Bulli Workers Club. From 7pm onwards, we’ll be answering questions from parents who might like to enrol their child in Kindergarten next year. We start our K -6 Life Education program on Wednesday. 5/6C and 6P will be going to the Art Gallery on Wednesday to develop their writing skills. This opportunity comes from the professional learning course that Mrs Pechey and Ms Clarkson participated in last week. Kindergarten will travel to Killalea on Friday to engage with that beautiful natural environment. Thursday will be our highlight day. Parents are invited to have a look around their children’s classrooms in open classrooms from 10:30am. At 11:00am we hope parents will be able to stay and share morning tea. The canteen will be open for snacks. Then at 11:30 we will be having our Public Speaking assembly where we hear the finalists from the competition that has been running for students from Year 2 to Year 6.  As well, Mr Graeham Kennedy, the Regional Director of Schools, will be visiting the school on Thursday morning. I hope lots of parents are able to take the opportunity to visit us on Thursday.

Public Speaking Assembly
Thursday 29th May, 11:30am
Over the last few weeks, children in years 2 to 6 have been discussing and preparing speeches both in their classrooms and at home. The topics were chosen from the state multi cultural competition list and were quite challenging.
All teachers involved have nominated 2 children to represent their speech to children and parents.
This has been a difficult task. The decision was based on preparation, logical argument, eye contact, voice (projection and clarity) and how they deliver their speech. All these elements must be strong in a finalist. The finalists and topics are:
Stage 1
What can kids do?
Sanna, Freya
Liam, Ruby
Stage 2
The power of words or welcoming refugees
Jay, Jordyn
Olivia, Joshua
Lachlan, Brianna
Caitlin
Stage 3
The role of the Media or Un-Australian
Stephen
Caitlin, Georgia
Elise, Sam

Mrs D’Arcangelo

Awards Survey
The teachers at Woonona East are currently reviewing school welfare practices and policies. At present we are looking at the school award system for regonising positive student behaviours. We would value your thoughts about this system – what works, what could be improved, other ideas. Please discuss this with your family and, if you’d like to contribute feedback, return the sheet enclosed with the newsletter by Wednesday 4th June, 2008.

Bullying – Signs of being bullied

Children who are being bullied may not always tell adults. They may be afraid or ashamed. Some signs of being bullied may be:
•    not wanting to go to school
•    finding excuses for not going to school, such as feeling sick
•    wanting to go to school a different way to avoid the children who are bullying them
•    being very tense, tearful and unhappy after school
•    talking about hating school
•    bruises or scratches
•    talking about not having any friends
•    refusing to tell you about what happens at school.

Your child may show other signs of unhappiness as well. For example, they may have problems sleeping. These signs may not necessarily mean they are being bullied but you need to check out what is worrying them.

Library News
This year the students in years 2 to 6 are invited to participate in the MS Readathon. As classes visit the library this week they will find out about Multiple Sclerosis and how they can help by joining in with the MS Readathon. Each child will receive a registration form this week when they visit the library.
Scientists do not know how people get MS – it is still a mystery. A great deal of research is being done to investigate the cause and treatments and also trying to find a cure for MS. MS is not hereditary, though genes do play a part in having MS. We know this because more women than men get MS.
The Readathon runs from June 1 to June 30. Please support this Readathon.
Happy reading!

Environment News
1.  Planting last week
Year 6 planted shrubs in the garden bed next to their classroom (the umbrella garden), near the library and in the garden near the entrance/flagpole.  Many thanks to these students for carrying out this work.  The plants used are associated with coastal sand scrub which occurs directly behind the sand dunes.
2.  School Environment Management Plan
Thanks to all those who attended the School Environment Management Plan meeting last week.  The agreed priorities for 2008 are:
•    Underplant trees in the street frontage zone with banksias, lilly pilly’s and leptospermum as examples to create a wind break and encourage the birds – use an open planting approach rather than a dense planting.
•    Continue to maintain and infill planting the social zones (frog pond area, flagpole area and umbrella area).
•    Interpret the gardens to educate the children on what is planted and why.
•    Repair and replace the Australian animals.
•    Develop a composting system to use canteen vegetable scraps and packed lunches scraps.  Keep an eye out in future newsletters for a date for a ‘composting mufti day’ to raise money to purchase some rotating drums for the composting.
3.  Bush regeneration/weeding Tuesday
Don’t forget our bush regeneration group on Tuesday!  Come along to maintain the school gardens, have a chat and contribute to our school environment.  Bring a hat and trowel.  Meet at the sandpit at 9am on Tuesday mornings and stay for half an hour.

Loud Shirt Day
Thank you everyone for the fabulous response to Loud Shirt Day.  We had raised $277.35 on Friday and there is still money coming in.  The Shepherd Centre for deaf children will be very pleased.  Congratulations everyone and a special thanks to 2D for raising the most money.

Understanding Food Labels Helps Families Make Healthy Choices
Buying healthy and enjoyable food for your child’s lunch box can be tricky at the best of times, but having to interpret nutrition information panels and health claims can make it an even more complicated task for parents. Food manufacturers use packaging as an opportunity to promote the benefits of their product but may not tell the whole story about what the food contains, such as high fat, sugar or sodium (salt) levels. Parents are often left feeling confused about what is really healthy for their child.
Advocacy group The Parents Jury’s campaign for Improved Food Labelling Systems informs and empowers Australian parents to learn about the types of information that appear on food packaging, to understand labelling regulations, and to practice reading food labels at home with their families.
It is important that parents are able to trust the nutrition information they find on food packaging because Nutrition Information Panels, nutrition claims and endorsement ‘stamps’ all influence the purchases that parents make on behalf of their children, for better or worse. The Parents Jury’s campaign advocacy kit contains information about the different types of information that appear on food packaging such as ingredients lists, Nutrition Information Panels and nutrition claims. It teaches parents how to interpret food labels and to read between the lines of potentially misleading claims and endorsements. The kit also contains lots of handy tips, resources and Internet links to help parents and children make ongoing healthy food choices. To get involved with The Parents Jury’s campaign for Improved Food Labelling Systems, visit http://www.parentsjury.org.au, or email enquiries@parentsjury.org.au.

Head lice – Changed advice
Up to date information on head lice is important as there are many misunderstandings about ‘head lice’ and how to treat them effectively.
NSW Health has recently conducted a research project in NSW to find out more about head lice and effective ways of treating infestations.
As a result, advice from NSW Health to parents and school staff has changed significantly.
The Department has worked collaboratively with the Federation of Parents and Citizens in support of this research project.
Results of research show that:
Head lice infestations are a common occurrence, particularly in primary schools.
* about 23% of primary students have head lice at any one time
* anyone can catch head lice regardless of their age, sex, or how clean their hair is
* head lice move from one person’s head to another via hair
* head lice do not survive long when they are off a human head
* head lice do not live on furniture, hats, bedding or carpet
* head lice have built up some resistance to head lice treatments
* daily combing of white hair conditioner using a fine tooth comb is effective in getting rid of head lice and eggs (nits)
* school communities may need to hold ‘check and treat’ or Nitbuster days where everyone learns about and starts treatment on the same day.
Information on effective treatment is essential to break the cycle of head lice infestation.
What you can expect from your school
Advice from NSW Health indicates that there is no need for students to be sent home or excluded from school because of head lice.
Observing students scratching their heads is not a reliable or efficient means of assessing head lice prevalence in the school.
Where one student has head lice this serves as a warning light that there is likely to be an infestation in either specific classes or across the whole school population, including staff.
The school will send a letter home to parents  when infestations of head lice occur and request that parents examine  their child’s hair and undertake treatment where eggs or lice are identified.

Uniform Policy
The Woonona East School community supports and encourages the wearing of school uniform by all students.
Rationale
•    The wearing of school uniform encourages a sense of equity, school identity and pride.
•    Parents are able to provide economical, appropriate and durable clothing for their children.
•    The school uniform has been designed to allow all students to participate in all aspects of school activities with comfort and dignity.
Dress Code
•    In support of the school’s Sun Sense Policy, all students are required to wear a hat. No Hat!  Play in the shade!  The wearing of a school hat is encouraged. The P&C provide a hat for all students starting kindy.
•    The school curriculum requires students to participate in fitness activities.  Footwear that facilitates physical activity is encouraged.  Shoe laces should be tied tightly.
•    The wearing of thongs or unsuitable footwear at school is not allowed.
•    All forms of jewellery are discouraged at school to avoid loss of precious items and injury to students.
•    Sleeper earrings or studs may be worn.  Students may be required to remove these for sporting activities.  These issues reflect health and safety concerns.  Wrist watches are acceptable.
•    In the interests of health, safety and hygiene the dress code for students requires that hair styles should be appropriate.  Hair ornaments should be kept to a minimum and hair should not interfere with the student’s ability to see or disturb their work habits.
General
•    Coloured nail and make up must not be worn to school.
•    Parents/Caregivers are asked to label all items of school uniform.  The uniform shop is open Monday mornings 8.35am till 9am and Wednesdays 2.30pm till 3pm.  It is run by parent volunteers.  New and second hand items are available.
Mufti Days.
Throughout the year a number of mufti days (out of school uniform) are held as fund raisers.  Appropriate casual clothes should be worn on these occasions.  Enclosed shoes should be worn for safety reasons.

Mothers Day Stall
Just a reminder that the Mothers Day Stall is this Friday 9th May.  Gifts are priced at $1, $2, $3 and $5.
Please remember to bring your money on the day.
Volunteers to help at the stall are still urgently required..

Loud Shirt Day Friday 16th May
Did you know that in Australia one child in every 300 is born deaf and it makes it difficult for them to speak?  Well on Friday the 16th May, it is Loud Shirt Day and you can help these children learn to speak.  Wear your loudest shirt and donate a gold coin and the money we raise will go towards helping these children learn how to speak.
