Eric will be holding a meeting for interested students next Tuesday at 2pm. Parents are welcome to attend this meeting. Newsletter Week 9 Term 1 2008

Posted on March 25th, 2008 in Newsletter by weps

• The gardens at our school are looking wonderful at the moment. The plants, native to this area, are thriving. The students are justifiably proud of them and comparing before and after photographs highlights the difference that has been made in such a short time. In this week’ s news there is an environmental update written by Jennifer Bean, mum of Alexandra and Thomas. Jennifer has been one of the driving forces behind our school’s environmental renaissance and I hope there are many volunteers to join her in the bush regeneration group on Tuesdays.
• Our back playground is also looking great, but unfortunately we can’t go on it yet. Hopefully we will be able to use it for our cross-country carnival next week. we will make a decision later this week after receiving advice from the appropriate government body.
• Congratulations to Brittany Clark who was selected in the South Coast basketball team. She will represent at the state carnival in May. Good luck to Joshua Court who travels to Nowra tomorrow to represent North Illawarra Zone at the South Coast AFL trials. National Young Leaders Conference
On Monday the 17th of March, Ms Pechey took Ebony, Kye, Chloe, Mitchell, Adel, Luke, Olivia and Joshua to the 2008 National Young Leaders Conference held in Sydney, at the Entertainment Centre. There were many speakers like, Deborah Albae, who is a children’s author of the Max Remy Super spy series. James and Justin who kayaked from Australia to New Zealand that took them 62 days. Police Commissioner Andrrw Scipione, also spoke about how he got into the police force and the many steps he took to get his proudest moments, and Catriona Rowntree who told us about her lifestyle. There were over 8000 children in the Entertainment Centre from all over NSW. We learnt lots of leadership skills, like not just wearing a badge makes you a leader. I would like to also thank Mr Cummins for allowing us this wonderful opportunity and the parents for driving us, and Ms Pechey for taking the time to represent us as our teacher. We hope to use the skills we learnt in our school.

Newsletter Week 8 Term 1 2008

Posted on March 17th, 2008 in Newsletter by weps

•    Our back playground had its first mow since the turf was laid. It looks green and almost ready to run on. Hopefully we will be able to shake off the cabin fever and be playing out there sometime soon after Easter. We are aiming to run our cross-country around the playground on the 2nd April.
•    As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, please be aware of the parking restrictions in Corinda Road when dropping off and picking up students. Our neighbours can be greatly inconvenienced when people park across their driveways and this practice, which is illegal, adds to the traffic congestion outside the school. Parking rangers are visiting to check on the situation.
•    Thank you to all who attended the Annual General Meeting of the P & C last week. To the parents who were elected to take on executive roles, your efforts will be greatly appreciated by students and teachers. Woonona East is fortunate to have such a strong and supportive parent group.

•    Well done to Brooke who represented at the South Coast tennis trials last week.

National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)
The NAPLAN tests will assess the literacy and numeracy learning of students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 in all Australian schools. In NSW the NAPLAN tests replace the Basic Skills Tests. These tests will be held on the 13th, 14th and 15th May.

University of NSW Competitions
Notes are being sent home about these competitions for students from years 3 to 6. Participation is optional. Competitions are held in science, spelling, writing, maths, English and computer skills. Closing date for entries will be Friday 4th April.

Custodianship of Country
At each school assembly the following message will be read:
“As we begin, we would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land – the Dhawaral people. We pay our respects to the Elders, both past and present, and to those of the future, for they hold the memories, the traditions, the cultures and the hopes of Aboriginal Australia. We must always remember that under the concrete and soil this land is, was and always will be, traditional Aboriginal land.”

Band News
We are fortunate that Eric Dunan will be again coordinating our school band this year. Notes were sent home last week to all children in Years 4, 5 and 6 seeking expressions of interests who would like to be in the band and access tutoring from Eric. These notes need to be returned by this Wednesday.

Parent information meeting will be held in the 4/5H classroom at 8.30am on Wednesday 19th March.
Cheers – Mrs Hearn

S.R.C Fundraiser
Our school has been sponsoring a World Vision child called Rita Jean. Rita Jean lives in Lebannon, she is 12 years old and she likes to do maths. She speaks Arabic and she goes to primary school. She lives with her parents and has one sister. Woonona East is sponsoring Rita Jean because her country is still rebuilding after 17 years of civil war, which destroyed much of the infrastructure. To help Rita Jean we will be having a CRAZY HAIR day on Wednesday 19th March. A gold coin donation would be fantastic. You could have your hair any way you want and you can wear mufti too, so it will be a great day. If you don’t want to wear crazy hair or mufti you can still donate to help Rita Jean.
Chloe, SRC member.

Water Monitoring
Congratulations to the whole school. What a great effort with over 220 students using their water bottle in class each day. This has improved greatly since November last year. This improvement is across every class. Last term’s winners, Mrs Marshall’s class took out 3rd place this term. Taking out 2nd, is Mrs Carter’s class, moving up rapidly from 3rd place. Watch out, I think they have a plan to take out the trophy. But, term 1 2008 winner is, 5/6c, who had an amazing average of 27 out of 30 students using their water bottles in class every day. They will enjoy a munch and crunch morning tea this week.

Newsletter Week 7 Term 1 2008

Posted on March 10th, 2008 in Newsletter by weps

Please take care when dropping off and picking up students at school. Tempers have been frayed over incidents this year when parents have disregarded or not been aware of the rules. The parking rules for Corinda Road are repeated in this newsletter.

If you have any concern regarding your child’s progress please see your child’s teacher. Often information circulates regarding issues around the school and, as it moves further from the original source, it can be very misleading. Parents can draw conclusions leading to unwarranted concerns about their chilld’s learning progress. If, after consulting with your child’s teacher, you still have concerns or require further clarification, please contact the office to arrange a time to talk to the principal.

Congratulation to Ruby and for earning their Principal’s Awards last week.

Cross Country Success
Now the swimming is out of the way, students can turn their attention to the upcoming cross-country carnival. I draw your attention to the following letter sent to the school
Dear parents and keen athletes
Last year, as part of a Woonona High initiative we invited Ron Thompson a well respected local athletics coach, to conduct morning athletics training for interested locals.
The numbers were small but the results we acheived last year were very encouraging.
The program proved to be very effective for those students who attended, two of the three relay teams which trained with Ron won state medals and the other team made the state final.
I commend this activity to you as a valuable experience for any level of athlete who is interested in improving their running or athletics skills in general.
we look forward to seeing many new faces as the competetive Cross Country and Athletics seasons approach.
