Sun Sense

Hello again everyone,

Australia has the highest incidence of melanoma in the world.

Recently our canteen committee donated sunscreen for the children to use in class before going out into the sun. At WEPS our loose collared shirts with longer sleeves are good for sun protection and we encourage all children to wear hats (especially bucket or broad-brimmed styles). We remind children regularly and enforce our ‘no hat, play under the COLA’ rule. We also try to schedule outdoor activities to occur in shaded areas or at times when the sun’s ultraviolet radiation is at a lower level. All children from Years K-6 are exposed to lessons in ‘sun sense’ via the PDHPE syllabus.

Remember, when out in the sun,

1. Slip on clothing that covers your arms and legs

2. Slap on a broad brimmed, bucket or legionnaire hat

3. Slop on 30+ broad-spectrum water-resistant sunscreen

4. Seek shade

Another Outstanding Success!

I would like to extend a huge thank you to all the parents who gave of their time, talent and support to make last Thursday’s Carols By Candlelight another outstanding celebration of the school community and a wonderful way to mark the beginning of the Christmas season.

For the overall organisation, delicious food, games and stalls thank you to our tireless fundraising committee led by the endlessly energetic Kate De Rome; Kate’s family Mary, Morgan and Debbie, Michelle McDermott, Jane and Scott Morgan, Jo Walker, Terri and Barry Martin, Kylie and Jo Meirs, Vim Colless, Angela Marrott, Barbara Hemingway, Ben Turner, Nicole Nicholson, Sharon Clements, Renee Williams, Lara Demito and everyone else who gave their time on the night. Thank you also to Woonona Lions for manning the barbecue.

The children loved the old fashioned arcade games once again supplied by the kind and generous Alan Boyd. Thank you too, to Mrs Harris- Cross and Ms Pechey for braving the Sponge Throw once again!

Thank you for the wonderful music supplied by Nigel and Linda Hilton, Jonathan Christley, Mark Davies, Colin Atkinson, Karen and Michael Bate, Cate Fowles, Julee Brienen, Claire Morgan, Vacey Usher, Kerri Burton, Greg Hand and Rob for organising the sound. Happy Campers 2010

Last week 3B, 3/4L and 4P had a fabulous excursion to Killalea State Park followed by camping. Congratulations to all the children who behaved superbly and showed a great spirit of cooperation.

We were fortunate with the weather but the whole camp was made hugely successful through the hard work of some parent volunteers who worked tirelessly putting up tents, cooking and getting up at 2am to deal with issues while the teachers slept blissfully on.  A big thank you to all the parents who stayed, but also to others who helped by providing assistance or food.

Annual Survey Results

Hello again everyone,

Thank you to the 61 families who responded to our survey earlier this term and took the time to make further comments and suggestions. Overall, the responses were affirming and constructive. Naturally, some parents also identified specific areas of concern. Below is a snapshot of some of your responses.

90% of parents agreed or strongly agreed that their children enjoyed going to school and that teachers were approachable and interested in discussing their children’s needs. There were many positive comments about the quality of our teachers, describing them as hardworking and caring.

Over 90% felt that the school was a safe environment for their children, that the office staff were helpful and that they regularly read the school newsletter and found it useful in keeping them informed about school happenings. The school was viewed favourably in the local community and in comparison to other local schools.

There was also good support for our computer programs but parents indicated that they would like more information about what their children are studying in this area. One way that we intend to address this request is with significant changes to the school website in 2011. Parents will be able to access more information about teaching and learning activities and find out about the valuable programs that go on in our school every day.

While 70% of parents were happy with the current school reports a significant number said that they would like more information about how their child is progressing and also how to assist them to improve. It is pleasing to see that parents view their role in their child’s education as a true partnership with the school.

Teachers will be considering how to address this request and others in our planning for 2011.

Enjoy your week.

Whooping Cough

There has been a recent increase of whooping cough (pertussis) among primary-school-aged children and a modest increase in high schools.

Coughing spreads the infection to others nearby. Whooping cough caught at school can spread to younger brothers and sisters at home and can be especially dangerous for babies.

Whooping cough starts like a cold and progresses to bouts of coughing that can last for many weeks. Older children may just have a cough that is persistent and is worse at night. The infection can occur even in fully-vaccinated children.

Children with symptoms should see a GP.

If your doctor diagnoses whooping cough, please let the school know and keep your child at home until they have taken five days of antibiotics. Keep coughing children away from babies.

Whooping cough vaccines give good protection against infection but immunity fades. If your school-aged child has younger siblings, it’s a good idea to check that they are up to date with their vaccines.

More information is available at www.health.nsw.gov.au or we have information brochures available at the office.

Enjoy your week.

Premier’s Spelling Bee State Final Results

Last Wednesday the State’s top primary school spellers competed to be crowned the Premier’s Spelling Bee state champion. We are very proud of Sanna Eriksson who represented our school and came 15th in the junior division.

Sanna was one of 76 finalists chosen from more than 88,000 students across the state who participated in the competition’s elimination rounds.

The junior competition was won by a Year 4 student from Biddabah Public School (Hunter/Central Coast region) with the word nullify.  A Year 6 student from Warragamba Public School (Western Sydney region) took out the senior section by spelling the word dichotomy.

Education minister Verity Firth, who also attended the event, said NSW is home to the best student spellers in the country.

“NSW students topped the nation in spelling at every year level tested as part of the national literacy and numeracy examinations – NAPLAN,” Ms Firth said.

WEPS will be entering the Spelling Bee again in 2011 so now’s the time for our boys and girls to start brushing up on those spelling skills!!

School Camp Out

What a fabulously successful night!!!.  Thanks to the 33 families and the 70 children that made it such a great night.  All the children were so well behaved, their parents should be very proud and they are a credit to our school.

The weather was perfect for the team challenge and stayed that way for the outdoor screening of the movie, which was enjoyed by young and old.

Thanks to everyone that helped out on the night and with the BBQ breakfast in the morning.

The school camp out was a great success! Thanks to the parents who ran the games.  My favourites were the scrabble game and three legged race even though I came last in it. I had a great time watching the movie under the stars with my hair braid on. Those swords and eye balls were great! Thanks Jeff for cooking breakfast and especially Kate De Rome for coming up with this great idea!

By Holly  3B

There were heaps of dragons in the movie and there were very fun games. I liked the sand pit game the best. I liked the swords that people sold and I liked sleeping in the dark. Thank you to the people that made up all the games.

By Nicholas KT

On Saturday night we had a camp out at school.  They organised everything very well.  The best part was the games and the light sticks.  It was really cool.

By Michael  4P

I loved the camp out because we got to watch an outside movie and we got to sleep in the school.  We played great fun games and we laughed a lot.

By Casey 1/2R

On Saturday night we went to the school camp out.  My dad and I set up our tent and went to the activities.  One of the activities was the 3 legged race.  I enjoyed all of the games.  We ate pizza for tea and then we voted to watch a movie called ‘How To Train Your Dragon’.  I played with my friends before I got into my tent to go to sleep.  There were egg and bacon rolls for breakfast and my dad made pancakes for me.  I had lots of fun and I hope we do it again.  Thank you to all the people who organised this, it was great.

Newsletter Term 4 – week 7

My School

On the 3rd December, the My School website will be launched. Parents will be able to access a range of information along with NAPLAN results. One of the new features of the site is the inclusion of school funding data drawn from the 2009 calendar year.

The published total for WEPS, around three million dollars, is made up of two components – Capital Expediture (major building projects etc) and Recurrent Income from State, Federal and other sources. In real terms however, WEPS has direct control over approximately 2.5-3% of this amount.

Last year, 81% of our recurrent income came from the State. Teacher and support staff salaries accounted for 75% of this amount. Building and ground maintenance, electricity, water, cleaning, curriculum support and the annual general operations grant for paper, books, art materials, library books, teaching resources etc, made up the remaining 25%. This grant portion, which is relatively small, is the one we account for each year in the Annual Report.

In addition, 16% of recurrent income came from Federal funding supplied to the State to support all NSW public schools as well as special programs such as the National Partnerships.

All monies receipted by the school ie payments made by parents for buses, excursions, performances and programs such as Gymsports and Dance 2BFit are also considered to be income although they are collected from parents and paid directly to suppliers. Donations and other fundraising (excluding P&C) or money kept in trust, such as collections for charities on mufti days, are also considered to be income.

I hope that this information will assist you to make the most of the information on the My School site. I have enclosed a Q and A sheet which will also help. However, if you have any questions please feel free to give me a call on 42841472.

Enjoy your week.

Good News For 2011

Hello again everyone,

Many of you will be aware that the Illawarra and South East Education Region has been involved in a trial of the School Learning Support Program (SLSP) throughout 2010.

I am very pleased to advise you that the trial will continue in our region until the end of 2011 and we will retain our current level of support teacher allocation and funding during that time.

The SLSP has been a wonderful initiative in our school, increasing our support teacher allocation from one to four days per week. This has enormously increased our capacity to assist students who require extra support in literacy and numeracy, allowed us to implement and manage the Multilit reading program and to train many parent tutors to work with the children at school and at home.

The SLSP has also allowed us to continue to meet the needs of students with disabilities in regular classes and provided avenues for quality professional learning for teachers which we hope to expand in 2011.

Thank you to Mrs Harris-Cross, Mrs Marshall and Mrs Hall who have done an outstanding job of managing the program this year.

Remembrance Day

Last Thursday WEPS students learned a little

more about Australia’s history and the men and

women who gave their lives while serving Australia in

wars, conflicts and peace operations by

commemorating Remembrance Day with a minute’s

 silence at 11am.

Thomas Blunden from 4P expressed his thoughts

 in the following poem.

War

Warfare is a horrid thing

 It has always been.

The screams of dying men both friend and foe.

In 1918 peace was made but not for long,

For the mines returned.

The soldiers came to the 2nd World War.

Too many screams, too many men, too much death and pain.

The sunlight came, the light returned we went to collect our dead.

There was my mate Charlie, he was my best friend.

I started to cry.

A German man put his hand on my shoulder,

We went to shoot again.

Written by Thomas Blunden (4P) on Remembrance Day

Mango Drive

Mobile Phones

Hello again everyone,

While mobile phones may have some positive uses for students outside of school, when brought to school and used without permission they can be very disruptive to teaching and learning and in some cases cause harm.

Used inappropriately, there is the potential for bullying, access to, downloading and distribution of questionable or illegal graphic content, inappropriate use of the camera for shots or videos that violate others privacy and the potential for loss, theft or damage of/to the device.

Therefore I am extremely disappointed in a number of students who have continued to bring mobile phones to school despite knowing the very clear rules regarding these devices.

The school acknowledges that some students may need to bring a mobile for reasons relating to safety when travelling to and from school. Mobiles brought for this purpose are to be accompanied by an initial letter from the child’s parent and are to be handed in at the office on arrival and collected on departure from school.

If a parent or carer needs to contact a student at school as a result of an emergency, they are required to call the school’s office and a message will be sent immediately to the student.

If a student needs to make emergency contact with anyone they can do so through the school’s main office.

In the event that students choose to ignore the school policy relating to mobile phones, contact will be made with parents to discuss the incident. If students repeatedly ignore this policy, the school’s Student Welfare and Discipline Policy will apply.

Thank you to all the people who ordered books through book club last month.  We managed to buy some great new books for the school library.  Your books will be delivered this week – unless you ordered late in which case they might take another week.

Your books will be delivered in a reusable blue bag.  In the interests of the environment I would really appreciate it if you could return these bags to the front office at your earliest convenience for reuse in the next order.  This will ensure that we don’t have to revert to plastic bags in future.  Thank you.

School Swimming

At the school swimming we did a safety drill.  It was really cold when we hopped out of the pool, but on Thursday we had a real emergency because it was storming.  I had great fun at school swimming.

By Claudia 2D

For two weeks Year 2 and some Year 3s went swimming at Corrimal Pool.  The water was very cold.  My favourite activity was lying on my back and shaking my arms and kicking my feet.  We went into the big pool.  I went from the middle all the way back.  It was so much fun.

By Isaac 2D

At the swimming scheme we practised things like freestyle, backstroke and rocket arms.  The water was quite warm except the first two days were a bit cold.  The swimming went for 2 weeks and I really enjoyed it.  We used Greens Northern Coaches and their service was excellent!!!  On the second last day we even got a really cool one with mad seats.  I loved everything!!!

By Hugh 2D

At the school swimming I got put into the biggest level.  I moved into the level below because there were too many people in the biggest level.  When we got in the pool we did lots of swimming.  We had a safety talk before we got in the pool.  One day we practised for if we had an emergency.  One day we did have a real emergency.  It was lots of fun.

Unfortunately our portable PA system was damaged and no longer connects to the large external speakers that we use at K-6 assemblies. If there are any parents with the necessary skills and handy with a soldering iron we would appreciate your help. Please give Mrs Liddle a call on 42841472.

Mulch!

Thank you to Paul Smith and Scotty from Attractive Trees for their generous donation of mulch. If there are any parents who can spare an hour or so before the end of term to re-mulch the area outside 3B classroom please see Mrs Liddle, call on 42841472 or just turn up at the school. We have plenty of barrows and shovels so no need to bring any equipment.

Newsletter Term 4 – week 4

Posted on November 1st, 2010 in Newsletter by weps

Thank You Parents!

On Saturday the P&C held a very successful working bee. I would like to express a huge thanks to the families and staff who came along and gave up their time to help make the school grounds safe, clean and attractive for the children.

At WEPS we have very large grounds and extensive garden areas to maintain. This can be a struggle at times with only two days of General Assistant time allocated to the school each week. This time is quickly taken up attending to minor repairs, maintenance and mowing leaving little time to devote to weeding, mulching etc.

Working bees are a wonderful way to get many jobs done in a relatively short time, proving the old adage that “many hands” do indeed make “light work”.

On Saturday we were able to weed and mulch the entire frog pond and dry riverbed areas, re-mulch some of the new garden beds near the toilet block and whipper-snip along the fence boundaries and around the buildings. Trimming of trees, mowing and snipping adjacent to the car park has opened that area up and made it much neater. The garden outside the library is also looking spic and span and will make a neat entrance to the new hall.

We hope to hold another working bee early in Term 1 next year.

Speaking of the hall, this Thursday I will attend the first pre-handover inspection after which any issues or minor repairs will be addressed. We are getting very close to being able to use this facility and the new canteen. I am sure that you will be impressed with the building and I am looking forward to the huge difference it will make to the way in which we conduct our school community activities.

Attendance Notes

Occasionally parents may receive a letter asking them to explain an absence when their child has been present at school.

One cause of this is when children arrive at school after the 8:55 bell and go straight to class without picking up a late note from the office. Teachers mark the rolls as soon as they enter the classroom and a child who is even slightly late may miss being marked present.

To avoid this confusion, parents are asked to bring their child to the office to be signed in if they arrive after the 8:55 bell has rung.

Please note however that all children should be at school by the 8:55 bell.

 Thank You Maths Helpers

Thanks to Barbara Hemmingway and Kerrie Burton who came along to help Ms Pechey last week with organising our Maths Resources.

Planning For 2011

Hello again everyone,

The end of the school year is fast approaching and we are busy planning for 2011.

At this stage we will be enrolling over 40 new Kindergarten students and our numbers are hovering at around 295 students for the coming year. This will mean that we will be staffed for 12 classes in 2011.

If your child will not be attending WEPS next year, please let their teacher know as soon as possible. Similarly, if you have a concern about the class your child will be entering in 2011 please put this in writing and forward it to me as soon as possible.

The staff will consider all such requests when forming classes within the constraints of our student numbers, the grade compositions that are possible and the number of teaching staff available to us.

Please feel free to see me or give me a call on 42841472 if you have any questions.

Please let Mrs Liddle know if you are able to help on 42841472, by dropping a note in the box in the office or via the school email on woononaest-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au.
